Tripping through October

(Alex Raymond)

Though it may appear to be so, I have not dropped from the face of the earth. We spent a long weekend at the old stomping grounds in Nebraska for my mother’s birthday and just returned yesterday evening.

The weather was perfectly autumnal and despite the rain it was a very enjoyable trip. Happy Birthday again Mom! We had a wonderful time. Thanks for the delicious meals (especially the homemade chicken noodle soup) and for the good, relaxing time. We really enjoyed ourselves. It is sad to have to go back to work today.

We did not come home empty handed though, a ghost made the trip with us to join the Halloween decor:

Driving home through the rain soaked countryside listening to the rest of Neil Gaiman reading Stardust was wonderful. The greens and golds and yellows of the land and trees were almost glowing because of the rain and it was very beautiful. The trip home just sped by.

I hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend. Just a few more days and we’ll get another one!

  1. Mary and I really liked it. I like the spider web painted on the side.

And let me say here publicly how THRILLED I am that the Yankees got knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. Every time that happens I think and angel gets its wings or something! At the very least I smile quite largely for many days afterwards.

  2. You left the mug of hot cocoa out of the frame…!
I really like that picture, it just says it all about your weekend.

  3. We enjoyed the weekend also! It is always fun to eat, shop and lay around and talk. Thank you so much for the nice gifts! I liked the movies even tho’ poor Dad just didn’t understand them!!

The ghost arrangement on your sofa table looks good!

Love you and see you Friday!!

  4. Thanks for the little pumpkins too mom (you can see them at the bottom part of the ghost picture).

Not thinking about it at the time I took The Lake House and Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing and Charm School home for the weekend. My dad wasn’t thrilled with either and was getting confused about the time jumps in Lake House (possibly due to the fact that he kept nodding off) and we had a good laugh when I remembered that Marilyn Hotchkiss jumped around different times and storylines as well.

That’s too cute Tom, as is Jaden.

It is rainy and chilly today Anne, hot cocoa may be on the menu for this evening.

I have barely started on my decorating Iliana but I pulled out the box this morning so that’s a start.

  5. Welcome back!

Love your little ghostie. Very cute. And glad you had a great time; I’m sure your mom enjoyed your visit for her birthday.

    What a good son.

  6. You’re mom is so beautiful and young looking. I’m guessing the handsome man on the left is your father? and the stunning, thin girl is you wife? We need a picture of you now. Great ghost and jack-lanterns.

  7. LOL. In my my mind I also really liked the spider web on the ghost. That’s so funny.

  8. Ahhhh…..I can’t wait to tease her with this. The girl in the photo with my parents is my 14 year old daughter.

  9. I like that picture too, booklogged. I used it as part of the Tart’s Halloween invitation last year.

  10. Wow, you’re daughter is going to be soooo mad. Please don’t tell her.

Hopefully, it’ll make your wife so happy. If not, don’t tell her either.

Let me start over – You sure have a cute daughter, carl.

  11. I thought it was funny booklogged, but I was not going to be the one to tell them about.

Happy Birthday to your mom Carl. It sounds like you had a wonderful weekend with the family.

  12. I think the art was done for that old movie Topper, if I remember correctly.

  13. We had pretty decent weather this past weekend, it’s good you already came. Now it is due to freeze tonight. But by the weekend it is going to be 70 again! Crazy. I never know how to dress! I love the ghost! I pulled most of my halloween stuff out on the 1st of Oct (I am never early!–I amaze myself sometimes!). I can’t wait to see The Lake House by the way! It is in my Netflix queue and I think there is finally no wait!

  14. No, I bought it in Norfolk where I was raised. Its supposed to get down close to freezing tonight here as well.

  15. Oh, you mean on the original blogspot site? Shoot an email to James and he will tell you how. He had me put some script in the dashboard of that site that automatically forwards it to this site.

  16. I would like to extend an invitation to you to join in on a collective blogging section of our upcoming winter issue of Reconstruction. The issue is the “Theories/Practices of Blogging.” In addition to the special section of posts on blogging there will be about a dozen essays on blogging.

    The deadline is October 27th.

Our intent in this section of the issue will be to collect a wide range of bloggers and link up to their statements in regards to why they blog (something many of us are asked) and any statement they have on the theories/practices of blogging.

If you already have a post on this you can feel free to use it, or, if you are interested, you can submit a new one.

We will link to each statement from the issue at our site, with the intent of creating a hyperlinked list of statements on blogging that can serve as an introduction to blogging (or an expansion of knowledge for those already blogging).

If you are interested please contact me at mdbento @ gmail.com

  17. While everyone is commenting on the ghost, which is indeed cute, I am more aware of the copy of Jonathan Strange and Dr. Norell off to the side. I do believe it is a Hugo winner, or least certainly a nominee, and I CAN’T WAIT TO READ IT! It’s up next for me this weekend.

  18. It is indeed a Hugo winner and a book I need to get back to soon. I’ve read about 250 pages and loved every word.
