Superbowl Sunday, the aftermath

Well there you have it. Another football season come and gone. Time to put on the black clothes and go into mourning for the next 7 months. Congratulations to the Pittsburg Steelers, winners of a sometimes boring, sometimes exciting Superbowl. I picked the Steelers to win and was actually fairly close with my prediction (24-17) to the final score (21-10). I have always admired Bill Cowher as a coach and I really wanted to see him coach the Steelers to the victory and I am really happy for him, Jerome Bettis, and the city of Pittsburg.

There were some really funny commercials this year. Unfortunately they were often spread so thin between boring, meaningless commercials (is that an oxymoron?!?) that they did not have as much impact as they could have. ESPN has all of the commercials up at their site here in case you missed any or want to see them again. You have to have pop ups turned off and I had to hit the fast forward button the player occasionally to get things going.

My favorites were the streaking sheep (which fits right in with last Fridays’ shaved animal post), the bear/beer commercial, the defibrillator/fly and friendly skies ones (both by Ameriquest) and the Sprint locker room commerical.

I want to take this moment to salute my brother-in-law Mike. Yesterday our church was doing a blood drive for the Red Cross and Mike and I went in at 11:45 to do our part. Unfortunately the iron level in my blood was .1 over the maximum limit and I was turned away. Mike, however, was able to soldier on and squeezed out a pint in a record 5 minutes time.

While I left church with a superhero name….Ironman….Mike was the true hero of the day, and he got 3 homemade cookies and a glass of orange juice to prove it. Not that I’m bitter or anything…

  1. I guess you don’t have to worry about anemia.

I’m glad I didn’t sign up since James had the flu. I guess somehow I knew.

I thought the same thing about the commercials. The good ones were sandwiched between ordinary ones.

  2. Thanks for having us over!

Mike was a little over-dramatic with the whole donating blood thing.

I think the funniest thing I saw last night was when Razz was walking out of the living room and Motley was following him with pieces of Razz’s tail in his mouth. It looked like Razz was leading Motley where to go. Poor Razz. I’m sure he was quite annoyed with Motley by the time the night ended.

  3. If you are looking for football, the rugby has just kicked off here; The 6 Nations, involving… oh, not interested okay šŸ™‚

  4. Please Angela, that thing they do over in the motherland may be called soccer but that pitiful game they do over here with the little white ball doesn’t compare at all to real football! šŸ˜‰

  5. My favorite commercial was the FedEx one where the guy kicks the little dinosaur at the end and then gets squashed by the giant dinosaur foot. I also liked the Cyldesdale one with the streaker and the one with the foal pulling the wagon and the parents pushing it from behind. Overall there weren’t a lot of great commercials. Arron Neville and Aretha Franklin singing were horrible and I couldn’t bring my self to watch the Stones. Aren’t they dead already?

As for the game it was ok. I wanted the Steelers to win but I wish the Seahwaks would have made it closer. The Seahawks seemed like the better team to me but they just couldn’t put the points on the board. Ok now the real question is how many days to the DRAFT. The pro bowl doesn’t count. The draft is the next fun non-football event. I love the draft. Everyone has positive visions for the future for their teams. Hope springs eternal for the next season. Even for our beloved Chiefs. šŸ™‚

  6. Jeff, yes, those were good commercial. I still liked the Bear/Beer one best of all.

Hey, Fence, rugby is one rough looking sport! I am amazed the players live through an entire season.

Hurray for Mike giving the gift of life. It is amazing how much blood is needed.

  7. What are you doing posting at work at 5:08? You’re supposed to be coming home to take care of me! šŸ˜‰

  8. Don’t you guys know that any true geek can’t abide sports in any form? That’s one of ground rules for becoming a geek in the first place.

Now the lingerie bowl, that’s okay…

  9. I’m a Renaissance geek, well rounded for greater overall geekiness!

  10. Bless you for trying to cheer me up James! Guess I should be supportive and watch KC’s arena league when they are on tv.

  11. I haven’t been much of a football fan lately. When I was a student I discovered I could get really cheap season tickets. (T hat was when the Chiefs were seriously losing.) I watched yesterday so I wouldn’t feel left out when everyone discussed the games and the cool commercials. NO one at work even mentioned it. I should have looked your blog up then. It was worth it for the clydesdale commercial.

  12. And he has the world’s tiniest dog, to boot!

Of course I didn’t watch the Superbowl, and I think commercials are ridiculous, so I’ll just say yay for Mike, and all blood donors.

  13. Mary, I’ll tell you a secret. The rugby people lead the world in cloning technology. At the start of every year they harvest cells and begin the cloning process so that we will have enough players for next year šŸ™‚ The death toll is high, but its worth it for the rolling mauls that Scotland humiliated France with over the weekend.

  14. Did anyone know “Top Gun” was also on at the same time? I caught a little football and a little speed. It really is a good movie even all these years later. I agree wholeheartedly with Jeff. The Fedex commercial made me laugh out loud because you didn’t see it coming. The streaking sheep was great. The drummer for the Stones looked like he quite didn’t know where he was, and Mick Jagger I swear was going to break a hip. Keith Richards looked like, well, hell. I hope none of them gave blood.

  15. Definitely was one of the most lame Superbowl halftime shows on record.

I would concede that Rugby players are probably tougher and meaner than professional football players…I can’t do the same for soccer however. I really can’t get into soccer unless its the Olympics or I’m watching it live…then its great. Otherwise I just can’t get into it. Same way with hockey.

  16. Alright Mike!!

I like how you are going to go into mourning how funny LOL…I dont care to much about football unless its the bucs, packers, or a really really good game!! I love the bucs vs falcons games esp when the bucs win and I am among a bunch of dirty birds..thanks for your time on all my comments esp on the political one!! Take care ttyl

  17. I was at the superbowl and it was awesome just being there. I heard a lot of people say the halftime show sucked on tv….but let me tell you, they did NOT suck in person!!! It was amazing!!

ANyway…hi….just thought I would comment on this post!! hehe šŸ˜‰

  18. Cool for you chelle! I’d love to go to a Superbowl someday…wouldn’t even matter who the teams were, just being there would be awesome. Glad you stopped by!

  19. I don’t even know who played. I had better things to do with my time. šŸ˜‰

  20. Miss Jay, that picture was taken when Mike’s dog was newly weaned and just leaving his momma. At a year old, Motley now weighs in at 7 lbs which by the way makes him 103 lbs shy of being eligible to give blood!

  21. That’s just sad Rob, truly sad…UnAmerican and sad…the committee is meeting to determine if we need to have you turn in your man card. But then again you are Mr. Fix-it and you have a truly manly entertainment center so I guess we can let your sacrilege of ignoring Superbowl Sunday slide! šŸ˜‰

  22. I didn’t watch the Super Bowl. I’ve never watched a Super Bowl. I don’t watch any sport. I don’t know a thing about cars. I don’t like hunting. I do like Art, and I’m good at decorating. I can even cook.

I’d swear I was gay, except that I like girls.

  23. Carl, you need the Spam Karma plugin! šŸ™‚

Who here wears those little princess crowns? A real man (like me) doesn’t even know what those are called!

  24. Yes I do, I’ve been inundated with spam today in which the only common word is “hi”. When I chose this word as one to block it sends everything with the letters h and i next to each other into moderation which is a real pain in the butt!
