This past weekend started early for me as I took Friday off to (finally) paint the bookshelf that my dad and I built last month. I’m very pleased with the result and need only to put a coat of finish on it before it will be….er, finished…and then pics will be posted.
Friday night Mosker had us over for a wonderful dinner and games. The food (including artichoke spinach dip, mini quiches, and two other wonderful things that I can’t remember the names of) was fantastic and it wasn’t long before we were groaning from being overstuffed. We then played several games of Trivial Pursuit, the Genus V edition I believe. Great edition of the game with a mixture of simple and more difficult questions. Tori and I took on Mary and Nic and we both won twice so everyone was happy…especially once we had ice cream with fresh raspberries and blackberries for dessert…ummmmmmm! Thanks Nic, we had a terrific time! In addition to all that Nic’s cats and their varied personalities kept us entertained throughout the evening.
Saturday, after more painting, we settled down to do something we hadn’t done in a long time and that was watch the British comedies on PBS. We used to do this weekly when we lived in Tulsa and I had forgotten how much I missed it. Watched two that I hadn’t seen before, To the Manor Born and Mulberry, in addition to Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By. Keeping and Time are old favorites and I think I’m really going to enjoy Mulberry. In it Death’s son goes to collect the reclusive Miss Farnaby. He instead joins her staff as a butler of sorts and procures a three month extension so that he can help her enjoy life. It is a very sweet show that I think I’m really going to like.
After that I was thrilled to discover that they were showing Bringing Up Baby, a Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn movie that I had been wanting to since we watched Philadelphia Story a few weeks ago. This madcap, screwball romantic comedy is wonderful with Grant and Hepburn exchanging witty one-liners almost quicker than you can follow. I have always loved Katharine Hepburn in this role. If you’re a fan of either I highly recommend this film. Great stuff. The evening ended with an episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus and all was right with the world.
Sunday was more painting followed by more Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr. I feel like the weekend actually extended through Monday, despite having to go to work, because we were given a gift of a break in the upper 90’s/low 100’s temps. I’m not sure if it even got above 80 degrees yesterday but in the afternoon there was a breeze and it felt wonderful to sit out on the porch and read. It was unbelievably amazing and makes me that much more anxious for autumn.
Well, that’s how the past four days have went with us, what have you done?
The Adventures of briscoe County Jr used to be a great favourite in our house. We even named a whole batch of kittens after the characters. Nothing cuter than a little tabby kitten called Socrates 🙂
Jeepers, that’s a lot of TV. We always have our cable turned off for the summer, so I haven’t watched anything since May…of course, I don’t know any of those shows anyway. I have a poor memory, and it’s good if I can remember 2 or 3 on an ongoing basis.
Television for “entertainment” would just feel weird. I pretty much mainline CNN here.
I hate the news….can’t stand to watch it. What I see online when I fire up the internet and what I hear on the radio is enough for me.
I have to admit that I much prefer watching these older Brit coms on tv to watching current network shows and I LOVE watching TV via DVD. So nice to be able to watch the whole season as ou want to get through it. Especially great shows like Briscoe that were cancelled prematurely.
I luuuurve Monty Python. Have you seen the movies, in particular Life of Brian? They are amazing to say the least.
Mulberry sounds quite interesting, I’m going to have to check that out! Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By are two of my favorite shoes, Keeping just being absolutely hysterical and Time being funny, but bittersweet sometimes. Katherine Hepburn is one of my favorite actresses; if I could choose to look like anyone in this world, it would be her 🙂
I always get choked up by the end of As Time Goes By…love that show. Especially love Madge and Rocky who will be coming up in the episodes in the next few weeks (can you tell I’ve seen these a few times?)
I really enjoy Python and I’ve seen most of the movies. Holy Grail is my absolute favorite.
I’m glad you enjoyed Bringing up Baby. I caught that and Phil. Story several years back.
I love those Hepburn comedies.
Sounds like you had a great weekend. We went the Relay for Life Friday night and tired to recover on Saturday. We watched Done the Impossible on Saturday which lead to watching several Firelfy episodes on Sunday and another last night. We also squeezed in some grilling and swimming on Sunday. All in all a great weekend.
Sounds wonderful…of course anything involving Firefly would be!
I had seen Bringing Up Baby many years ago, but only vaguely remembered it. I really loved watching it again.
Jay, speaking of cable, the shows we watched were on public television or DVD. Around these parts we enjoy the outdoors until it gets too hot to enjoy. We are now back indoors most days. Monday’s cool temps were wonderful! We had not taken a family walk for weeks.
What is funny is that I asked Mary about getting Baby from Netflix and she said something along the lines of “I don’t remember liking it that much when I saw it”. I too had vague memories of maybe feeling that way. I think we must have watched some other Cary Grant movie close to that and maybe were comparing them too much. Watching it the other night we both realized just how fantastic it is.
