Age is just a state of mind

β€œAt the age of 20, we don’t care what the world thinks of us; at 30, we worry about what it is thinking of us; at 40, we discover that it wasn’t thinking of us at all.”
~Anonymous

Well, here I am. It is cool, crisp Friday morning in November and I am 40 years old. I’m not sure the reality of that has sunk in. I’m not entirely sure what the reality of being 40 really even means, other than that I’m not dead yet. If all goes according to plan I am only a third of the way through my life. ( πŸ˜‰ ) Then again I’m probably right at the start of middle age.

Other than occasional aches and pains that I don’t recall having I’m not sure that I feel any older than I did when I was 20. I like myself more now than I did then. It isn’t that I didn’t like myself at 20 but the ‘me’ that I have become is a ‘me’ that I am much more comfortable with. And yet 40 still feels like the awkwardness of adolescence in some cases because I still feel that I have a lot of growing up to do.

In honor of this momentous day in my life I decided I would avoid getting all maudlin and instead would answer a couple of memes that I was tagged with. The first one I was tagged with fairly recently and (proof that I am indeed getting older) I cannot for the life of me remember who tagged me. If it was you, please own up to it in the comments and accept my thanks. The second is from Annie who tagged me with the Six Random Things meme a long time ago.

In what may or may not be a coherent way these things will tie into the looking back/looking forward mood that the approach of age 40 has had me in.

Holidays on Ice ~David Sedaris

–published 1998
–144 pages, Back Bay Books
–4.5/5 stars

I have always been a person who becomes fully immersed in the pomp and circumstance of the holidays, particularly Christmas. Usually, however, I am a little more content to let November be about Thanksgiving before I dive into Christmas celebration. This year I feel completely different. Perhaps it is because Christmas is a season that has so much to do with hope and salvation and love for fellow man. I think my heart is crying out for some of the warmth of Christmas tradition and the comfort the rituals of this time of year.

In that spirit I entered Barnes and Noble this week and found myself looking at the various books on the Christmas display and I saw this little gem. I have heard various bloggers discuss David Sedaris on their sites (you know who you are) and although I have heard him speak on NPR in the past I had not read any of his books. The back cover synopsis:

“HOLIDAYS ON ICE collects six of David Sedaris’ most profound Christmas stories into one slender volume perfect for use as a last-minute coaster or ice scraper. This drinking man’s companion can be enjoyed by the warmth of a raging fire, the glow of a brilliantly decorated tree, or even the backseat of a van or police car. It should be read with your eyes, felt with your heart, and heard only when spoken to. It should, in short, behave much like a book. And, oh, what a book it is!”

made me think that I could actually get away with reading something of a Christmas nature this early in the year. Dear readers, this was a good choice!

An Interview with Lisa Snellings

Though October has come to an end, the spirit of the season has not yet died away within my soul. One of the things I have been looking forward to for a long, long time is the opportunity to interview Lisa Snellings. Lisa is an artist whose work both artistically and through her blog has had a tremendous influence on my life, particularly the parts of me that I share via this blog and my online relationships. The variety and creativity showcased in her creations makes her an artist that I am continually aware of, wondering what she will be making next. I had determined during the last R.I.P. Challenge that I was going to make sure to include Lisa Snellings more in this year’s challenge…so it couldn’t be more fitting to end this incredibly well attended third R.I.P. Challenge with an interview, a sale, and some giveaways from Lisa Snellings.

Without further adieu, I give you Lisa Snellings.
