Out of This World Mini-Challenge

*Updated with Chat Information at End of Post*

It is Friday.

But not just any Friday, no siree! It is the Friday before the Out of This World Mini-Challenge, hosted by yours truly as a part of the tribute challenge (Dewey’s Books Challenge) that Chris and Robin are hosting for our beloved Dewey, community-developing blogger extraordinaire, who passed away in November. The blogging world at large did not know that Dewey was very ill and in a great deal of pain. You wouldn’t have been able to guess by the things she posted and the many and varied community building activities that she hosted through her site. She was an amazing woman, and many of you were very close to her. I am honored to be able to host this mini-challenge as a remembrance of Dewey and most especially for those who feel the loss so strongly. I personally know the strong bonds of friendship that can be formed in this community and how the sudden loss of one of those bonds can be devastating. Whether you knew Dewey or not, I hope you will take a moment as you participate in this fun, science fiction short story challenge over the weekend, to say a prayer for Dewey’s family, who suffered the greatest loss and have the biggest burden–to soldier on in this world without wife and mother to comfort and to hold. This is for you as well.

As this is Friday I did not want to let the opportunity pass without showing some great art, and what greater art is there than the universe itself…or at least the enhanced views of the universe. So, throughout this post you will see out of this world images as well. All images come from the European Homepage for the NASA/ESU Hubble Space Telescope site. This site contains page after page of high definition images already set up for desktop wallpaper.

And now, on with the show!

The Stars My Destination ~Alfred Bester

The Stars My Destination ~Alfred Bester

–published 1956, originally as a 4 part serial in Galaxy Magazine
–212 pages, SFBC 50th Anniversary Collection
–5/5 stars

REVIEW SUMMARY: A must-read classic science fiction re-imagining of the Count of Monte Cristo, yet so much more.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Gulliver Foyle, sleep-walking through his existence, is awakened to his full, monstrous potential when his derelict ship, adrift in space, is ignored by the passing vessel, Vorga, and he is left to die. This catalyst propels Foyle on a course of vengeance that will shape the future of an entire galaxy.

THE GOOD: A page-turner. Surprisingly contemporary 60+ years after its release. Engaging anti-hero. Introduction of the concept of jaunting–planet-bound teleportation controlled by thought–which dramatically changes the planets’ economic and social structure. Thought-provoking and exciting vision of the future.

THE BAD: One small portion of the ever-escalating climax is conceptually odd; the denouement could have been a few pages longer.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Stars My Destination is a book that all science fiction fans should read simply because it is a classic worth reading. It maintains its relevancy and should appeal to those who prefer to read more contemporary science fiction as well. This is also a book I would recommend for those who do not consider themselves fans of science fiction but enjoy a good story. It is an accesible, fast-paced story with enough thought-provoking material to appeal to those who like a good story with a little meat to it.

Highly recommended!

Sci Fi Experience: Short Story Sunday, January 11th Edition

It is the second Sunday of the of the month and once again time for Short Story Sunday, where I feature some of the short stories I read during the previous week/weekend. It just so happens that this week every story I read, even those I read in book form, are available online should any catch your eye.

Best Science Fiction Stories was my lunchtime companion several days this past week and I managed to delve into The World Turned Upside Down, a science fiction collection edited by Flint, Drake and Baen, for the remainder of my sci fi short story reads.

Friday Favorites: 2008 Sci Fi Book Covers

Whoever coined the phrase, “You can’t judge a book by its cover” certainly never saw the incredible science fiction and fantasy book cover images from illustrators who capture our imaginations and hold our wallets hostage each and every time we enter a bookstore.

Recently I recalled that there was a site that posted all of the science fiction and fantasy book and magazine covers each year. My limited research was turning up dead ends so I turned to a couple of science fiction bloggers who I thought might have the answer. Within a very short space of time John DeNardo of SFSignal had my answer: Locus Magazine! He promptly sent me the link, which was exactly the site I had in mind from the previous year.

As we are into the second week of the Sci Fi Experience I thought it might be a great idea to point you over to the Locus Online 2008 Cover Art Gallery as well as to show you some of the examples of book covers from last year that certainly caught my eye.

I have limited this to a handful of the science fiction covers that came out last year. I strongly encourage you to visit the Locus link yourself to view all of the remaining science fiction covers as well as the fantasy covers. There is a treasure trove of great illustration there and it is a wonderful place to get inspired about your next science fiction or fantasy read.

All images are copyright of the artists listed. I decided, with a couple of exceptions, to show you the cover illustrations sans graphics. However, if you click on those images, a separate window or tab will open to show you what the book cover itself looks like.

And away we go…
