Travels in the Scriptorium ~Paul Auster

Travels in the Scriptorium ~Paul Auster

–published 2006
–145 pages, Picador
–4/5 stars

I have been very good in controlling my book buying habits of late (which I attribute primarily to the fact that I haven’t been going into the bookstore much lately). Because of this my defenses were down and when I went in to Barnes and Noble last week to pick up a copy of Stephanie Barron’s A Flaw in the Blood for my wife I wasted no time in deciding to pick up this Paul Auster book shelved close by.

My conceit during our annual anniversary getaways is that I will finish one book during our time away. That rarely happens because I often take something along that is too big to realistically finish in the time frame alloted (after all, I don’t only want to read on my anniversary *wink, wink*). At only 145 pages, I knew I could not go wrong with Travels in the Scriptorium.

And how could I resist with a back cover blurb like this:

Blue: A Preview

(Art in this post may best be viewed if your screen resolution is set no higher than 1024 X 768.)

Yes, I know. I am supposed to be gone. Get off of my back already will ya! I’m leaving. But before I go…

I wanted to give you an exclusive sneak peek into a new graphic novel that is coming out, Blue, written by a recent addition to the conversations over here, Elizabeth Genco with art by Finnish artist Sami Makkonen. There are two reasons it is important to post about this today. Number one (for you non-comic-book-geeks) is that Wednesday is the traditional day that new comics hit the stores here in the U.S. and so posting about comics on a Wednesday just seems like the right thing to do. Number two: you are just in time to get your order in for this book. The best place to order this is through Diamond Distributors via your local comic shop. This book is featured in this month’s Previews and the order code is:

It also looks like it may be available through Amazon for pre-order. The graphic novel is scheduled to be released in July. Meet me on the other end of this sneak peek and I will tell you more. Just a word of warning, there is a bit of adult language.

Hellboy Library Edition: Volume 1

Hellboy Library Edition Volume 1: Wake the Devil and Seeds of Destruction ~Mike Mignola
–published 2008 (reprints older material)
–288 pages, Dark Horse
–5/5 stars,

In large part due to the successful 2004 adaptation of Mike Mignola’s work by the phenomenal director Guillermo del Toro and a few animated specials, Hellboy is much more of a household name than many other non-super hero comic book characters. However my suspicions are that few people outside of those who proclaim themselves fans of the genre have picked up the individual comic books or the graphic novel collections to discover just how incredible they really are.

I am here today to convince you to do so while reviewing this new collection of the first two graphic novels.

The Ladies of Grace Adieu ~Susanna Clarke

The Ladies of Grace Adieu and other stories ~Susanna Clarke

–published 2006
–235 pages, Bloomsbury
–4.75/5 stars

“Magic, madam, is like wine and, if you are not used to it, it will make you drunk.”

It is a foregone conclusion that you dear readers are every bit like myself–there are books on your shelves that you had every intention of getting to the moment that you purchased, or were given, them but instead they have languished unread. And then that fateful day arrives in which you gently slide the book off the shelf, turn back the cover, and you find yourself swept away. As you close the last page you wonder aloud, “How could I possibly have waited so long to read this book?”.

Such was my experience with Susanna Clarke’s collection of short stories, The Ladies of Grace Adieu.

for all those
who seek light
in the darkness

for all those
who shine light
into the darkness

Thus opens this World Fantasy Award winning book of short stories set in and around Charles de Lint’s fictional North American city, Newford. Charles de Lint is an author whose discovery I can attribute (both in my personal life and literally) to Terri Windling and the wonderful things she has done through places like Endicott Studio. If you are unfamiliar with Charles de Lint you can read more about my thoughts on the man in my review of Widdershins, my first glorious foray into the world he has created.
