Second Foundation Group Read, Part 1

I’m not sure if any of you feel it, but February seems to be rushing by. We are nearing the end of this year’s Science Fiction Experience and have reached the point where we only have half a book to read and we’ll have finished our shared journey through Isaac Asimov’s Hugo Award winning Foundation trilogy. Wow, time does fly and all that.

I was very fond of Second Foundation when I read it for the first time and am enjoying it even more this time reading it with an eye towards deeper discussion. And since that is what we are here for, let’s get right to it!

Spoilers to follow.

Young Jack Gantos is beyond thrilled. It is the summer of ’62 in the small Pennsylvania town of Norvelt and Jack has plans to enjoy every minute of his freedom. But that freedom is cut short when, in true boyish fashion, Jack makes a mistake that frightens his mother and his neighbor, Old Lady Volker, nearly to death. Thus ends the summer as far as Jack is concerned. He is grounded for the season with his only reprieve coming in the person of Miss Volker, who requires his help getting the obituaries of original Norvelt residents ready for the town paper whenever they happen to pass away. Jack can feel his own life passing away. But what Jack doesn’t realize is that he is about to have the most exciting summer of his young life, with events far beyond the adventures he had imagined for himself.

Part autobiography and part wonderfully constructed fiction, Dead End in Norvelt is a young adult novel that will captive the hearts and minds of readers young, old, and everywhere in between.

Weekend Warblings

I hope everyone is gearing up for a pleasant weekend. In our house we plan on playing it low key, basking in the warm glow of the drugs we are both on for week-long illnesses: an ear infection for Mary, possible strep throat for yours truly! Ah the joys of the cold and flu season.

As with most weekends our house will be filled with music and one group that will be dominating this weekend’s play is The Civil Wars. Since I don’t watch much live television I was not one of the many who discovered The Civil Wasr through their song Poison and Wine being played on Grey’s Anatomy. Until seeing the above video posted on a blog site yesterday I had not even heard of the duo. Once discovered I was quick to introduce them to my wife and we spent the evening listening to various recorded and later live versions of their music.

Wow! They can sing.

Do you Flea?

Everyone has their own style and if you are like me, making your house into a home is a process that takes time and undergoes many changes. Our home style is fairly eclectic, mixing antiques and faux antiques with found objects, art prints, contemporary items with a dab of shabby chic, liberally sprinkled with books. I tend to grow very attached to the things that decorate our home and over the last decade those things have been added to and yet much has remained the same. This year we are wanting to change things around a bit. We aren’t planning a radical shift in style so much as an expansion on some things that we’ve grown to love over the last few years (my wife’s adoration for 60’s drinking glasses, for example).

And so we took our first trek of the year on the antique/flea market road with a trip down to Springfield, Missouri with my parents and my aunt and uncle this past Saturday. It was a sunny yet bitterly cold day and we had a lot of fun reminiscing about our childhood (my aunt and uncle’s kids are the same age as my brother, sister and me) and digging through others’ trash to find treasure. That is probably a bit unfair as all the places we went to were more in the antique vein and less in the flea market arena, but we still had a lot of fun. I got some really good ideas, found a few fun things, and didn’t spend much money at all.

It was a win-win!

Second Foundation Group Read

Time flies when you are having fun, and I’ve been having a wonderful time re-reading the Foundation Trilogy with this group of folks, some whom are re-reading it as well and others who are reading it for the first time. It has been great seeing this through the eyes of others and has caused my appreciation of Asimov’s works to grow beyond the high estimation I already had for them.

We are going to bring this Asimov group experience to a close with a group reading of the final novel of the original trilogy, Second Foundation. Second Foundation has one of my favorite Michael Whelan covers ever. I remember being so thrilled to finally get over my hesitation in reading this series so that I could get to this book to discover just who this girl was. I wasn’t disappointed and I hope you will enjoy her as well.

We would love to have you join us. The reading will begin this coming Saturday, February 11th with postings on Sundays beginning on the 19th and will end with the final discussion on Sunday the 26th, ending just on the verge of the close of the 2012 Science Fiction Experience. If you would like to join in, the sign up linky is just after the jump.
