Anyone up for an interactive reading experience?

The-Dragons-Path

It has been a few months since I have participated in a group reading experience and I am experiencing the itch (whoa, that sounds like a terrible personal problem, doesn’t it?)

TMI aside, I have been enjoying Daniel Abraham’s work in collaboration with Ty Franck writing as James S.A. Corey. Their first novel, Leviathan Wakes, is one of my favorite reads of the year and I am nearly mid-way through the second novel, Caliban’s War. This series that he is currently working on, The Dagger and the Coin, sounds intriguing, especially given that reviews I read talk about the emphasis on character.

Orbit books just announced today that for the month of June you can pick up a copy of The Dragon’s Path on Ebook for just $2.99 and in addition you get a copy of Leviathan Wakes. [Okay, actually it is the other way around, but for the purposes of this group read, just go with it]. If you click here you can use this site to launch into the site from which you want to purchase your Ebook.

Additionally, the book has been out for some time and so it should be easy to pick up in used bookstores or your local library.

What I am proposing is a group read that begins on July 5th and before I set up a reading schedule and commit to this I wanted to gauge your interest. If you think you might want to do an epic fantasy read together, let me know in the comments section. If you would like to host a week of questions covering a section of the book, please let me know that as well.

  1. The Long Price Quartet is an awesome series, one of the best of modern fantasy. I liked it immensely and it made Daniel Abraham one of my favorite writers. Unfortunately – or in the light of your post, not – I was not able to read Daniel Abraham’s latest works. “The Dragon’s Path” included. So, I would certainly like to join this group read. And although I am not sure yet if time allows it maybe host that week of questions too 🙂

    1. Glad you are joining in. I’m looking forward to this too. And the nice thing about it is there are two other books already published, so anyone who is dying to continue on will have more to read before having to play the waiting game.

  2. I’m down. It’s been way too long since I’ve participated in a groupread. July 5 is also a good start time–my last class of grad school ends on July 10, so there shouldn’t be too much overlap. 🙂

    1. She’s down with it and up for it. Yay!!! Happy the timing works out well with the school break. The odd start date will mean a slightly longer lead time for that first week so it should work out nicely.

  3. It has been a long time since I participated in a group read.
Gave them up when I got real about the fact that I couldn’t participate all that well.
But this book looks interesting. True, at first, it was the cover that was hooking me in along with the fact that
one of the author’s books is your fav of the year so far. After reading the description, the story sounds quite interesting. Besides two books (Cinder and Israel, My Beloved), I have no other plans for which books I will read this summer. So, I will go for it and hope that I will actually be able to participate. Contrary to my history, I do love group reads and yours are also interesting.

    1. I haven’t always been successful in participating either, Deanna. Even with ones I’ve hosted (*cough* second Mistborn book *cough*). Hopefully you can get a copy of it soon and maybe get a bit of a jump on the start. Glad you are wanting to join in.

  4. I’m in 😀 It will be my first group read. I’m a bit of a slow reader but I’ll do my very best to keep up.Let me know and I’ll pick up a copy 😀

    1. Hooray! Thanks for joining us Kelly. We will be doing it for sure, there are already enough of you interested that we’ll have a good time experiencing it together. So go ahead and snag a copy and, as I told Deanna, maybe you can get an early start on it.

I’ll put up details soon regarding dates, reading schedule, etc., but we will start July 5th “officially”.

  5. It sounds like a fantastic book. Unfortunately I have too many things going on at the moment. I look forward to following the progress and I hope I won’t be disappointed watching from the sidelines. Have fun!

    1. I completely understand. Hopefully you can join us for the next one, whatever that may be. 🙂

  6. I have 40-50 books in my MUST READ NOW! stack, so I’ll have to take a skip. I will be following along with the questions and comments.

    1. I know the feeling Richard. Since I technically already own this one (as it was bundled with Leviathan Wakes back when I bought it), it is actually one in my virtual pile.

  7. You know the last time I attempted a group read I failed fantastically. But I’m up for trying it again-especially with this book. FYI: anyone who purchased the Dragon’s Path last month, should also have Leviathan Wakes, Orbit did the same deal in reverse last month.

    1. As I mentioned above, I’ve failed my own, Starr, so I know the feeling. Glad you are throwing in with us all the same.

  8. Carl, please count me in for this. The e-price is right, and anything with strong characters is something I want to read!

    1. Great! I also read that he treats economics in this one and I LOVED his short fantasy with an economic bent that I read/reviewed earlier this year.

    1. Thanks on both counts!

I would love to discuss the de Lint. I’ve got a couple more chapters to read. I set it aside because I wasn’t sure if you were reading it. We have both been way too busy! Lets pick a date a week or so from now and do just that.

      1. I have to admit I put it aside too because we haven’t really been talking. Bad me. I will pick it back up this evening. 🙂

I plan for that anyway… Thanks to someone I find myself engrossed in Leviathan Wakes. I rarely buy e-books any more, but this is whisper-sync so for 4 dollars more I have two e-books and the audiobook of Leviathan Wakes. I am in a science-fiction mood. I just read Fuzzy Nation by Scalzi. Why don’t I read him more often… (I also read Redshirts and loved it!)

  9. You know, if you really wanted to be part of a group read, there’s this 1Q84 thing going down somewhere that I’ve heard a little about…. :p

I can probably drop in on this one and may be able to host something as well. I will have a bit more time in early July, since the family will be in Japan and I have the house to myself. Will keep you posted.

    1. Ha! I know. Murakami is a “mood” author for me. I have to be in the mood to really get lost in his work.

Yes, let me know if you think you can do a week, that would be great!

      1. I’m really glad you told Little Red about The Expanse. I just put myself in line for a library copy. (#14 for 15 incoming copies. Yay.)

Depending on how you want to structure the posts, I could possibly host something about the inevitable politico-economic details. That’s likely what I would write about anyway. Or, if you’re just passing around select chapters, that’s fine too.

        1. Hey, perfect timing on the library queue.

I will look soon and put together a plan and will get in touch with you, thanks!

  10. I just finished Caliban’s War this morning, and oh boy are you going to love how it ends! I can’t wait until the 3rd one comes out (later this year, I think?).

I’m going to have to bail on doing a read-along right now, just have too much other stuff going on. 🙁

    1. Cool! Actually the third one came out last week on June 4th. Snatched it up the day it came out.

  11. Count me in. I’ve just bought it and will start reading soon. Thanks to sfsignal for including this in their post of links today.

    1. Great David, and thanks for coming over here from SF Signal. One of my favorite places.

  12. You know me: always looking for a good Read Along! 😀

This book as been on my TBR pile for some time although I haven’t read anything else by the author.

I’d be quite happy to host one week if you still need any dates covered! 🙂

    1. That is fantastic Sue, on both counts.

See you on Goodreads you just read and really liked the White Fire Crossing book. That one has been on my radar for a while now.

  13. Hey Carl,
Yes, please count me in. I’ve been a bit all over the place the last few weeks to be honest but I fancy giving this a go.
    Lynn 😀
