Its 3 and 1/2 hours until the beginning of the end. 12 seasons of NYPD Blue will come to an end with tonight’s episode. I’m not prepared for this to end. I wasn’t prepared when I wrote about this as my inaugural blog post back in January, nor am I prepared now.
NYPD Blue was our show. Mary and I looked forward to Tuesday nights with great anticipation and were always annoyed when there was a rerun or an “interrruption in regularly scheduled programming”. This was the show that we had to ourselves. Scheduled time each week to cuddle together on the couch and be entertained.
NYPD Blue was also my watercooler show. Up until last July my office was right next to Pat’s and first thing Wednesday morning we would meet to talk about the previous night’s episode. Being on the third floor has made this a little more difficult but we’ve managed to make sure to save some time during the work week to catch up on Blue.
In my opinion there has been no character in the history of television who has grown and changed so much as has the character of Andy Sipowicz. Dennis Franz and the writers crafted a character with rough edges and real problems and infused that character with a life and a passion that made you love him for who he was, and root for him each and every week. You wanted to see Sipowicz grow and succeed and find love and be happy. I’m so thankful that I jumped on board with this show fairly early on and have been able to enjoy it week after week with family and friends. Goodbye Andy Sipowicz…you will be missed.
Never got into the show. Don’t know why, but just never did. I have nothing against cop shows. I kinda grew up with Hill Street Blues (the original Blue, by the way, which my dad loved). And in college I remember really loving Homicide: Life on the Streets. I’ve been watching The Shield and it’s got very good writing too.
All I remember of NYPD Blue was that the hyper-right got all up in arms because of the language and nudity on free TV.
Yeah, could care less. Maybe it’s the fear of seeing Andy’s butt, and of course the jealousy of someone having more hair back there than mine.
It’s 9:30 right now and I want to call Carl and bother him in the middle of this show so bad!
You actually think I would’ve answered the phone!?!?! What a great ending to an amazing show. Still can’t fathom that its over but it ended in the most perfect way. Good tv is such a pleasure…makes me wonder why I bothered with crap like Alias in the past…
Tom…glad you’re chiming in! Welcome…lets go see a movie soon!
Well, Carl, you said it perfectly. I couldn’t add much, except that I feel like I’ve lost a friend. A friend I went through a lot of grief and fear and pain with. I watched “Blue” from the very first episode because I also loved Hill Street Blues by Bochco. I was working in AR at the time and no one did drunks accurately until Sipowitz came along. Every time he drank or almost drank I anguished for him. Good night, Andy. And I am so happy you’re still shaking up the administrators.
I loved the way they allowed all the characters to say ‘goodbye’ at the end. It was so seamless with the storyline but so personal to those of us devoted to the show.
nothing will compare to how devistated i was when next gen ended… *sigh*.. lol
I never watched a single episode of NYPD Blue. However, there is a new show starting
soon about a cop or detective who is blind. I can not think of the actor’s name at the
moment or the name of the show, but plan to check it out.
oh yeah.. that looks good.. it’s called “blind justice”
it starts march 8th on abc.. the lead actor is Ron Eldard.
I showed your site to a girl at work and she was impressed. I told her not to be if you knew Carl. KIDDING! I am looking forward really only to Star Wars. I hear Anakin has a run in with some lava (that’s gonna leave a mark) The Ring 2 looks awesome and that comes out in a couple of weeks. No way will Karen go see it so it looks like a threesome if James isn’t busy. I have a guy at church that is really cool that loves movies, so I might hook up with him at some point. I can try to get you some Prozac for those NYPD blues.
Carl is right. It was a great way to end a great show.
It really made me feel that the characters will go on with
their lives…
Tom…please don’t mention the words ‘threesome’ and ‘James’ in the same post…I’m trying to eat lunch here! Tell the girl at work to chime in. The more the merrier!
Sorry man, didn’t want to ruin your mountain oyster sandwich.
….. 🙂
