2005 Oscar Musings

(Kate Winslet, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cate Blanchett, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Salma Hayek)

Well, the 2005 Oscars have come and gone. I watched this year’s Academy Awards more out of interest in fashion than in content as I had only seen one of the 5 films nominated for best picture (Finding Neverland) and knew it did not stand a chance next to the other contenders. I was happy with the winners in each category. I felt Jamie Foxx deserved to win for Ray and I thought his acceptance speech was the best of the evening. I was happy for Clint Eastwood. I was thrilled that The Aviator didn’t win in all the categories that it was nominated in….mostly because I’m a LOTR fan and didn’t want it to share top honors with Peter Jackson’s masterpiece.

I enjoyed Chris Rock’s opening monologue…found it quite apropos that he swore in the first sentence that he spoke. I felt that he lost steam as the evening went on though I think this was due more to the format than to any lack of creativity on his part. Did anyone else catch his comment before Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek went up to present? Something along the lines of “you’ll really enjoy these next 4 presenters”. If you don’t get it, you’re a real boob and need to keep more abreast of situations around you.

I enjoyed the way they mixed up the presentation of awards this year but was really disappointed that they didn’t show clips from the documentaries and short animation categories. I usually see something that catches my eye and makes me want to see it and by cutting these out I think they did a disservice to the filmmakers. I can’t believe they kept the show to just over 3 hours…that in itself was a marked improvement.

The ladies pictured above were my picks for best dressed. I did think that Laura Linney looked amazing except for her hairdo. That hairstyle always reminds me of a mullet. Ziyi Zhang (House of Flying Daggers) also looked very pretty as did Charleze Theron. I thought Clive Owen and Samuel L. Jackson were the best dressed men.

What did you think? Weigh in on all your Oscar impressions.

  1. For the first year in many, I didn’t even watch a minute of the Oscars. I worked the entire day and was exhausted afterward. Watched an episode of 6ft

  2. I had planned on reading or working on something while I watched but the pace went so quickly that I actually found this one somewhat interesting though not EXCITING like last year’s.

  3. oh weird, Carl, half my comment was deleted. I wonder if it’s because I used an “illegal character”? Right after “6ft” I tried to use a less-than symbol. Must have truncated the rest of the message, which was:

I wouldn’t have taken you for a member of the fashion police!

  4. First off, women are amazing so anything to do with women’s fashion is definitely an area of interest, but yes, I actually do know something about fashion. I love watching those “What Not To Wear” shows and other similar things on Style and TLC network. I dress pretty casual myself, but mostly due to not wanting to spend money on clothes (and having a “big belly” to quote Lydia)…..takes away from comics and games…you know, that important stuff. I read alot of magazines/watch alot of shows that have to do with fashion and with home decor. Like to be in-the-know. I’ve been accused of being a “gay straight man”….I like to think of myself as more of a Renaissance Man!

  5. i never watch award shows.. have never really been into them.
actually, they bore me.. i usually don’t agree with the results.. and i already know what i like & what i don’t. and i guess i just don’t care if already-famous people, get even more glory.

now, when “good will hunting” won & the careers of damon & affleck took off from that… that was exciting to me.

  6. They’re self congratulatory, but I find it exciting on years like last year when ROTK swept the awards. Just like in every walk of life people like to get recognition from their peers and I’m sure Hollywood types are no different. I also like the shows because, at least in the past, I’ve been exposed to foreign language films and documentaries that I wouldn’t have heard of otherwise and I’m always on the lookout for stuff like this. After watching all the extra stuff on the LOTR DVD’s I’ve gained such appreciation for the sound guys, the film editors, cinematographers, etc. and I think its great that they get recognized at these awards shows as well.

As for your comments Angela, I’m also happy that Matt Damon is doing well (he is GREAT as Jason Bourne) but Ben Affleck just sucks! No offense…. 🙂

Ben Affleck and Keanu Reeves kind of have the same thing going on…you either like them or you don’t. I like Keanu and don’t like Ben…don’t really know why but that’s the way it is.

  7. I watched the opening then went to play basketball. I was only gone for an hour so came back and watched a little.

I thought Rock did a pretty good job in the beginning although he sure did insult a lot of people but I guess he can get away with that.

  8. I was just surprised that he could go 3 hours and not drop a “f” word here or there. Remarkable restraint on his part!

Seriously, hope no one takes offense to the Ben Affleck thing. I can admit that Keanu is a dope but I still like him and I can respect anyone’s right to like Ben as well.

  9. lol.. i don’t necessarily like damon or affleck that much as actors.. but i just thought it was neat that these 2 unknown friends made their dreams come true, & that they won the award when no one even knew who they were.. tho guess it’s kind of peaking early.. does that mean they can only go downhill from there? :/
    hah. jk

  10. I watched it while I did some house work. It was mostly boring. I do like seeing what people are wearing. Hillary Swank was my favorite. I loved her dress. Most of the dresses were very similar in style, except for hers. She doesn’t seem like the trend follower type person. She also seems more normal than the other hollywood women. Haven’t seen her movie but I am looking forward to it.

  11. I did like Hilary’s dress as well. I liked her acceptance speech as well and will check out Million Dollar Baby’ when it comes out on DVD. On “E” when they were interviewing her live this guy behind her kept looking at her butt (was a very low cut dress). It was so obvious…I’m sure if he has a significant other that he got a good butt kicking (pun intended) when he got home!

I agree that its great that both of them were buddies and were able to actually write a screenplay together and have it be such a great movie.

I do think that Damon is very talented. He was sufficiently creepy in Talented Mr. Ripley and, as I said, I love him in the Bourne movies.

  12. i actually couldn’t stand the 1st bourne movie.. (and never watched the 2nd).. i thought it was incredibly boring!.. tho i kept comparing it to the book, which was much more exciting..
but i did like damon in the 2 ocean’s movies.. he’s a funny guy.

  13. I haven’t read the books though I did read a summary of the plots on Amazon when the movie came out and was surprised by how far away from the books they went with the movie. I loved the movies because of the fact that they were slow and actually built up (their version of) the character. Didn’t like that (spoiler!!!) they killed off the love interest at the start of the second one, however.

Damon is very funny. I’ve enjoyed him when I’ve seen him on Saturday Night Live.

  14. Yet you liked Unbreakable, which is another slow movie….which shows just how great a movie it is!

  15. Ben vs Keanu…

Ben has been in twice as many flops as Keanu. He will be in anything for a buck.

  16. A Walk in the Clouds sealed it for me as far as Keanu is concerned. Mary and I love that movie…

Of course, its not really Keanu that makes that movie. Its Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Anthony Quinn who really make that movie but I enjoy Keanu in it.

  17. And just to clarify my comments in the first paragraph of this post, its not that Finding Neverland isn’t a great movie, because it is. I just knew that Million Dollar Baby and Aviator would be getting the Oscar Nod well before Finding Neverland.

Johnny Depp is a tremendous actor, but he looked like a clown in that weird tux last night.

  18. hah. well yeah, unbreakable is so different.. with a strong plot & mystery.. m. night is a genius.
whereas bourne identity (at least the movie) was just a bland action movie..

  19. in my book, finding neverland was the winner. lol
i had NO desire to see aviator. million dollar baby never looked interesting to me, tho friends said it was good. and jamie fox did an amazing job as ray, but the movie over-all was such a downer that it’s not one of my favorites.

  20. There is no way Johnny Depp could ever look like a “clown”. I will admit that he looked uncomfortable. I wanted Martin Scorcese to win because he had such a long list of movies that could have gotten him an Oscar. I thought Jamie foxx really did deserve it ,especially after seeing him on The actor’s Studio and hearing how much training he has. I was surprised you didn’t mention Emma’s dress. It was so classic. I love the way the clothes have become so elegant. I also thought Halle Berry’s was great. She and Charlize seem to have a talent for picking the most elegant gown consistently.

  21. Should’ve known better than to criticize your man, Pat! 🙂 I liked Emmy Rossum’s dress…still disappointed she didn’t get an Oscar nomination. I thought both Halle and Gwyneth were beautiful but I liked the above dresses better. Julia Roberts looked great also, especially in light of the fact that she recently had a baby!

Tonight’s the night….last NYPD Blue. Mary and I will be crying with you Pat! Can’t believe it! This just sucks!

  22. By the way, has anyone seen Maria Full of Grace, the movie that Catalina Sandino Moreno was nominated for? I’m generally not into movies that have anything to do with the drug culture (traffic comes to mind) but I really want to see this. It sounds amazing.

  23. IS IT ANY GOOD?!?!?!? Kind of late to start watching now since tonight is the last episode ever! 🙂

  24. I forgot the Oscars were on Sunday night. Mike and I watched reruns of American Hot Rod all night, which was probably better anyway. I always love to watch the red carpet portion of any award ceremony to see what all the actresses are wearing. I would have to say that Kate Winselt and Charleze Theron stole the show Sunday night.

  25. Not that it matters, but Karen and I have never seen The Godfather movies so we were too intent on part 2 to care about the oscars. Caught the highlights Monday. Jaimie Foxx totally deserved it, Ray was awesome (and I don’t particularly know Ray Charles Music). Has anybody seen Million Dollar Baby? It must be a real sleeper because of all the hype you hear. I see alot of you saw Finding Neverland. That is the best date movie out there, especially if you have kids. Can’t wait to see the chocolate factory.

  26. Thomas, the only oscar movie I saw was Million Dollar Baby. It was great. I really liked it. Very good performances.

  27. Doesn’t Willy Wonka look freaky!?!?! Can’t wait to see it though cuz I’m a huge Tim Burton fan, and Depp fan as well.

  28. do depp & burton have some kind of friendship that he’s almost always in burton’s movies?

  29. I think Depp probably shares some of Burton’s bizarre sensibilities. They are both creatively eccentric.

  30. No doubt. I love Depp in the Elton John glasses. That’s the same boy that was in FInding Neverland. I think he is the male equivalent of Dakota Fanning. You do tend to see the same stars with the same producers/directors (i.e. Joaqin Phoenix+ M. Night Shamalyan = Love). I see Pirates 2 is starting to film, and everyone including J.Rush is back, should be just as cool. And is it just me or is Kiera Knightley the hottest looking white chick in showbiz right now? Of course I think the guy from Paparazzi was cool too. I thought that was a cool movie that nobody saw.

  31. Kiera is cute. Bend it Like Beckham was a really fun movie. Didn’t see Paparazzi but will check it out on DVD sometime. Looking forward to Pirates 2!

  32. I’ve been recommending Paparazzi to people at work and I get a dazed look like maybe some other time. It is a GREAT rental! Do not rent “Cellular” it’s simply awful!!
