Poppet Wonderland

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
Of cabbages–and kings…

~Lewis Carroll, The Walrus and The Carpenter

…of mirrormasks, and poppets, of free books and of dreams…

Thus, to begin with, allow me to offer public thanks to one Jeff Smith for thinking of me during a trip to Half Price Books and making my day a bit brighter by presenting me with a copy of the Alisa Kwitney book The Sandman: King of Dreams. This book makes a lovely introduction to/overview of the world of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, and yet I’m not sure I would recommend reading it unless you’ve already read The Sandman as it does contain some spoilers.

One of the many interesting tidbits I picked up is that Alisa Kwitney is the daughter of science fiction author Robert Sheckley, whose marvelous short stories I just discovered last year…better late than never! If you’re near a Half Price Books you may be able to snag a copy of this for your collection for an amazing price!

And speaking of amazing prices, how does FREE grab you? Well, due to a bit of tremendous good fortune, Chris over at Stuff as Dreams has come into possession of an autographed copy of the Mirrormask Illustrated Script Book, pictured above. Out of his generosity he has decided to gift his original unautographed copy to some lucky individual. All you need to do is post a comment on this post of his by Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. to be entered into the drawing. Both this book and The Alchemy of Mirrormask are wonderful collectibles so get over there and sign up!

You’ve seen them here and on other sites around the internet and now they can be yours! Lisa Snellings-Clark has recently reopened the gallery and Poppets are on sale! Simply click the above picture to go to the ebay auction site. But beware: the Poppets are on the move!

There are a limited number of the $9 little red poppets for sale. You’ll see on the ebay site that the first listing is for these poppets and there are only 5 left. But wait, there is hope…if you scroll to the bottom, Lisa has just put another 20 up for those who want them. Each poppet is hand painted and they are wonderful little creatures.

In addition to these, Lisa has a number of completely unique, one-of-a-kind poppets and other creations up for bid, including several of an Alice in Wonderland nature. Three of my favorites are:

(The White Rabbit, The Mad Hatter, and The Red Queen)

Get over there and buy…

But wait, there’s more!

I have procured a small number of Little Red Poppets who will be looking for new homes courtesy of the Once Upon a Time Challenge!

It is not mere chance that brings Neil Gaiman and Lisa Snellings-Clark together in today’s post. They and their works will feature prominently in the upcoming posts/giveaways for the challenge. Stay tuned and be ready for some of the best contests yet. Don’t hesitate to join in if you’ve been sitting on the fence, or have just stumbled upon the challenge for the first time. We have yet to reach the half-way point in the challenge and we’ve garnered a few new participants in the last few days!

I look forward to another fantastic week of reviews, giveaways, and other magical moments with all of you!

  1. I got a copy of The Sandman: King of Dreams from Half Price Books as well. I love that store! I wish they’d open one here. The only time I get to go is when I’m in Texas.

    Thanks for mentioning the contest!

I love the Alice poppets…the rabbit and the mad hatter are my two favorites…and I absolutely love the little red poppet with it’s mouth open 🙂

  2. I agree, the Alice poppets are wonderful. Guess I’ll get over to ebay and see how much money I can spend. Egads! I know I’m in trouble already.

  3. Yes, and they will only go up as the week goes on. I’m happy for Lisa though.

  4. Yeah, they’ve already climbed out of my price range as well. But Lisa deserves it all and more! What she does is priceless. I feel honored to have one of her one of a kind pieces.

  5. The poppets are all wonderful! Have to agree that the Alice ones are going to be beyond my means, but how adorable.

  6. Love the Red Queen best. Much too pricey for my pocketbook. But a little red one is flying my way as we speak. 🙂

  7. Wish I could afford the Alice poppets, but sadly, no money to spare…well…not that much.

Look forward to your upcoming posts, Carl. I’m intrigued! 🙂

  8. Well you sure don’t have pity on us old folks on limited income! lol.. the poppets are really cute, but I’m working on “book dragons” at the moment! (which I don’t NEED)..sigh.
I’m 1/2 way thru book 2 Flyte and it’s really good for young adults (for me too)

  9. All the poppets are terrific…I’ve ordered some red ones and can’t wait ’til they arrive!!!

  10. The poppets are great. I can’t wait for the one I have on the way to arrive. Alas it is of the $ 9 variety while I also love the others they are out of my price range.

  11. I love the originality of the poppets. What I wouldn’t give for one of the Alice poppets – except money, unfortunately.

  12. pat… your, except money, line cracked me up. thanks for making me laugh this Monday morning!

  13. They’re so CUTE! Eee! Will keep them in mind for future presents. 🙂

New review! It’s shorter than my last, as I didn’t want to spoil any plot out of respect…but the books were great. 🙂
