It is a little over a month away from the 30th anniversary of a cultural phenomenon that still has tremendous impact three decades later: the theatrical release of Star Wars. May 25th, 1977 will be the actual anniversary date and as that time approaches I will step away from the Once Upon a Time-ish posts for a bit to concentrate on what has undoubtedly been the biggest influence on the things I treasure in the literary and entertainment world. Enough of that, for now. The reason I am mentioning this today is that I wanted to let the rest of you wonderful readers in on a Star Wars related contest.

You may or may not know that the United States Postal Service will be releasing a set of commemorative Star Wars stamps beginning May 25th. You can go over to their site and vote for your favorite, which for me has to be the Millenium Falcon stamp:

But, the most important thing you can do over at that site is register to win a Grand Prize trip for 4 people to Celebration IV in Los Angeles, CA from May 24th-28th. You sign up and can take up to 6 challenges, each of which gives you an entry in the drawing. The Celebrations are geek heaven for Star Wars fans.
Why should you do this? So you can take me with you, of course! I need a place to wear my Princess Leia costume:

Ok, I took the challenge, and I’m all entered.
Voted for the Luke stamp, though…
If I do win, I’ll take you along only if you bring a spare Leia costume for my husband.
Too funny. The site is blocked here at work for some reason though. 😛
Will do, Marina!
You know the USPS, Angela, NSFW! 😉
You?! Like Star Wars? No…;)
This blog is all about shocking revelations, Chris! 🙂
Yay Vader stamp! I wish we had these in the UK!
I will add my vote for the Falcon stamp! That Leia group shot is just wrong in so many ways.
With a cat named (Han) Solo, a dog named Harry (short for Harrison Ford) and another cat named Indy (duh, short for Indiana Jones) you can’t expect me to vote for anything other than the Falcon. I don’t typically care one way or another about stamps unless they raise the price but these are cool.
I have the ‘fat singing/dancing lady’ outfit that I’ll wear!
Carl, I’m sure you know this, but for any readers who don’t: each character in the Star Wars movie has a musical theme that is specifically theirs. If you listen carefully, you can always tell when Princess Lea, Darth Vadar or someone else is near…
Heheh. Oh, USPS, sometimes you go and do something cool. It always kind of surprises me. 🙂
Have you been to any/many cons yet, Carl? I know it is popular to mock them and the people who go…but…I find I rather enjoy the easy, accepting atmosphere and the energized, enthusiastic surroundings. 🙂
Good Lord….that makes me feel old! My aunt and uncle took me to see Star Wars
when it came out. I can remember standing in line for the Fox Theater….back when
there was one big theater instead of the multi-plexes. Of course, I was only 7, so I
really didn’t appreciate it too much!! And I did vote for Han. He was always my
favorite!
Yes, I did know that Bellezza. Just one of the many things I love about SW.
I’ve been to several science fiction and comic conventions, RB. They are fun to mock, but they are even more fun to go to. Its easy to get swept up in the spirit of the thing once you’re there. I have a comic convention to go to in a few weeks here and I’m super excited as its been awhile.
Thanks for the link, Carl. It’s too bad they are only going to pick one. Usually a sheet of stamps has 4 different pictures. That would be so much better in this case. I voted for R2D2.
I’m thinking the whole sheet of stamps are going to be available just like the picture shows and then they will be making the winner into an individual sheet of stamps. I’m probably wrong though. 😉
p.s. Is that Elvis I see amongst all the Princess Leia’s? (I think I’d rather dress as a Storm Trooper than her, myself.)
Yep, that is the famous Elvis Trooper, whose website is here.
