Mistborn: The Final Empire Group Read

No fooling, it is time to start the Mistborn group read, as promised in the recent announcement for Once Upon a Time VI. I am going to be joined in my hosting duties by three other very gracious bloggers–more about that after the jump.

I am very excited to be delving into another Brandon Sanderson world. My first taste, reading The Way of Kings, has me hungry for more and I am glad that there are others who will be going along on this journey.

Here are the details:

Given the fact that we all lead busy lives and have other stuff we want to read, I am hoping that the schedule that I have come up with will allow everyone who participates to do so easily while having time to read other books and/or do other things. The plan is:

Part 1: Prologue through chapter 6, Reading Sunday, April 1-Monday April, 9th.

–Questions provided by Carl by Monday, April 9th. Discussions posted Wed. April 11th.

Part 2: Chapter 7 through Chapter 15, Reading Monday, April 9th-Monday, April 16th.

–Questions provided by TBM by Monday, April 16th. Discussions posted Wed. April 18th.

Part 3: Chapter 16 through Chapter 25, Reading Monday, April 16th-Monday, April 23rd.

–Questions provided by Grace by Monday, April 23rd. Discussions posted Wed. April 25th.

Part 4: Chapter 25 through Chapter 34, Reading Monday, April 23rd-Monday, April 30th.

Part 5: Chapter 35 to The End, Reading Monday, April 30th-Monday, May 7th.

  1. Wooohooo…It is finally here! I’m really excited to read Sanderson again. This is going to be awesome!!!!

    1. Yes, it will be great getting back to his work. I’m already having all these great nostalgic feelings for our The Way of Kings Group Read from last summer. Wow, that book is still buzzing around in my head.

    1. I borrowed it from the library as well, Kristen. I thought I’d save the money and the hardback looked so inviting.

  2. Wow. When I started reading it last year (!) I didn’t finish Chapter 1 before I set it aside. I felt like I walked into the middle of a conversation and had no idea what was going on. There isn’t an earlier series this continues (to my knowledge) and no prologue. I figured I’d better try again “later” which I have yet to do and finally put it back on the shelf. Mine has a completely different cover, too. Maybe I read a different book… I’m hoping the first set of Q&A here will explain a few things and then I can try it again sometime.

    1. Did you maybe grab book 2 or 3 in the trilogy? The paperbacks all have different covers on them.

I remember some feeling that the beginning of The Way of Kings was a bit that way but once you get into it everything starts gelling together wonderfully. I’m hoping for some of the same with this first book.

    1. I hope you enjoy him Charlotte. I’m looking forward to seeing how this earlier work stands up against the his (almost) latest as that is the only book of his I’ve read.

  3. I’m definitely going to participate! I’ve already read this book, but it was quite a long time ago. It’s actually my favourite Sanderson novel and so I’ve been looking for an excuse to read it again!

    1. Great, Lisa! Wonderful to have you joining with us. Will be great to see how this read through compares to your first time.

  4. I have begun reading the book, but I don`t think I`ll have the time to participate in the group read. I`ll follow though and comments as time permits.

    1. Sounds good, Natalie, and please feel free to chime in anytime you would like.

  5. Sounds like fun! It’s on my TBR pile and this sounds like a great way to move it the finally off the TBR pile!

  6. I am joining in. I was going to read Elantris during April, but changed it out for Mistborn seeing how I wanted to read that one too. I may not do weekly blog posts, but I will participate in the comments.

    1. Elantris is another one that’s in my TBR pile. I’m hoping to read it during Once Upon a Time, but I know that I most likely won’t get to all of the books that I want to read.

    2. That sounds great Deanna. Glad you are in with us. Wouldn’t be the same without you. 🙂

    1. Andrea is a great read along host, Sue. Thanks for taking part with us on this one as well.

  7. I hope everyone enjoys the book. I know I did when I read it a few years ago. It was a lot of fun and quite different than A Way of Kings.

    1. I think that is part of what excites me about reading this one, Jeff. You had told me that before and knowing that you enjoyed it and that it is its own story has me very interested in seeing what Sanderson does with this series.

  8. I requested the book as soon as the readalong was announced, but it is only just coming in at the library tomorrow! I will be a bit behind, but I will do my best to catch up.

    1. That isn’t bad time, Marg! I’ll be a bit behind too because I won’t be starting until sometime later tonight.

  9. How I wish I had the time! I read the trilogy during Christmas and was dying to talk about it with someone the whole time. Alas, spring is too busy and there are too many unfinished books. 🙁
    Have great fun! 😀

    1. I hope you can pop in on some of the discussion posts and share your thoughts Booky Pony. Enjoy your spring reading! 🙂

  10. I started this book last night and am liking it so far. I am still early into it, but I think it will be a good read overall! It was almost sad starting it because I bought the boxed set and it was still in the plastic wrap… Now I am going to have to read the trilogy so they can all go back in the box together. 🙂

    1. I’m happy to hear that. I almost dove in last night but was too tired. I’ll probably read a little of it tonight and then get back to Spirits in the Wires so that I can get those questions ready first.

I was eyeing that boxed set with envy, but held off for now. I did pick up the hardback of the first book in the next Mistborn series when it came out though because I wanted to have it in hardback format.

      1. I bought the boxed set with my Christmas gift cards. I wanted more after A Way of Kings since we have such a long wait ahead! I also have Elantris.

I am off to read Spirits in the Wires. I have about 150 pages left.

  11. I first heard of Sanderson when he was picked to finish The Wheel of Time, I bought Elantris and loved the book, then I bought the Mistborn trilogy and was absolutely blown away.

I’ve left comments on other blogs when I’ve seen people doing group reads for books that I’ve read in the past, but this is the first time I’ll be reading the book along with everyone else (although to be honest I’ll probably end up reading the whole book in the next 2-3 days, I find Sanderson’s novels a little hard to put down).

  12. Okay, I’m real real late, but I decided to reread this book and join your group read, Carl. I’m getting my own copy of the book today, and will reread the first section, and post my first post this evening. It’ll be late, but I’m here! I love this series so much, even more after reading the second book. 😀

  13. Well, following in on the late-train… I’d love to participate.

The first two sections are going to be posted late, of course, but the plan is to be back on track and posting in sync by the third. 🙂

    1. Just realised I hadn’t put link up above in post. Whoops. Corrected now. 🙂 First part up now, with second part up likely later tonight, then hopefully be on track for part 3! 🙂
