I hope everyone is gearing up for a pleasant weekend. In our house we plan on playing it low key, basking in the warm glow of the drugs we are both on for week-long illnesses: an ear infection for Mary, possible strep throat for yours truly! Ah the joys of the cold and flu season.
As with most weekends our house will be filled with music and one group that will be dominating this weekend’s play is The Civil Wars. Since I don’t watch much live television I was not one of the many who discovered The Civil Wasr through their song Poison and Wine being played on Grey’s Anatomy. Until seeing the above video posted on a blog site yesterday I had not even heard of the duo. Once discovered I was quick to introduce them to my wife and we spent the evening listening to various recorded and later live versions of their music.
Wow! They can sing.
These are my two favorites of theirs at this early stage in my The Civil Wars education. I must say that I am always thrilled to find musicians whose sound is not all manufactured in the studio. Proof that these two are every bit as talented as their “official” videos show are the same two songs performed live in Jean Paul’s neck of the woods as the kick off to their first full length tour.
If you like their sound I suggest watching the many selections from this performance that are up on YouTube. They are all good. Congrats to them both on their recent Grammy awards.
And speaking of Grammy awards, Adele cleaned up at the recent event and I am really enjoying her release from her third album. She is another artist who does an incredible live performance. This one will be playing in the house over the weekend as well.
Hope everyone has a nice, healthy, peaceful weekend. What will you be listening to?
I LOVE the Civil Wars. Like you I saw them on a blog post, then watched more on Youtube, and even bought the album that night. Those are my two favorites songs also. And of course Adele is great too. Enjoy your weekend!
You too Shelley!
I just introduced my daughter to them this morning because I knew she would like their sound as well. Great stuff!
I recently discovered The Civil Wars too – through 8tracks.com – a site where people can make playlists to share online. Don’t they remind you of the songs from that movie Once?
Yes, James, they do. My wife was the first one to say that last night when we were watching videos from that live concert. There is one song in particular that reminded us of them and I can’t recall now which one it was.
I’ll have to check out that site! The blog I found this on had a 25 song playlist with this included and I plan on checking out all the rest of the songs on there over the weekend to see if I find more new to me artists that I like.
Back when I first heard of The Civil Wars, their album was either free or dirt cheap. I got it and fell in love with the harmonies. A perfect pair of voices the two have when they sing together, and their chemistry is stirring and nigh provocative. That said, I’m extremely happy to see that you’ve found them. I trust you bought Bartons Hollow? In addition, they offer their live album Live at Eddie’s Attic available for FREE on Noisetrade (link), which sounds practically as good as the studio version, I think.
I love the fact that Joy Williams used to be signed to a Christian record label. The contrast of music styles is great.
I just found out about them yesterday and have been home with strep, but I do indeed plan to buy the CD. I’m finding all their live performances to be great. Even the covers are fun, like those of Michael Jackson and also the Jackson 5. They even make “You are my sunshine” amazing.
Thanks for the links. Why didn’t you tell me about them earlier (he says accusingly!) 😉
We’re on the same wavelength today. I posted one of their songs on my blog this morning: “Girl With A Red Balloon”. There are no words for how much I adore it. Such amazing artists.
Too cool! And I haven’t listened to that song yet so I’ll do so on your blog!
I hope all of you feel better soon. I haven’t heard of them. Thanks! I always like discovering new music.
Thanks, I plan to. I’m pushing the vitamins (through eating fresh fruits and veggies like crazy) and taking my pills so I should be better than new soon.
Glad I could pass these guys on to you, they are worth discovering.
I don’t listen to music often…kinda stopped years ago.. but started to get back into it with the old ipod Kelly sent me but now its’ “dead jim” and so I am back to no music… too bad the classic ipods still cost so much! geez. I did listen to Adele on youtube though and she does have a fantastic voice!
glad you and Mary are taking care of the “sickness”..!! get well soon to both of you!
You need to just use your PC to listen to music. It is almost exclusively the way I listen to music. Pandora is an excellent free music service and there are many others. I bought some cheap $10 speakers from Walmart that I plug into my laptop that really boost the sound.
We will indeed get better. And with a long weekend thanks to President’s Day we should be back to normal soon.
Oh, yay, that’s great that you discovered The Civil Wars. Their vocal abilities are amazing! They are a big hit in my household. 🙂
Yes they are, wow!!!
love Civil Wars, love that harmony! Barton Hollow is a regular album played at our house, and I came across “Tip of My Tongue” which is a sweet one, released as a single I think. Poison&Wine is so spectacular in that how truly it resonates…deep sigh. Joy has released at least one album solo (from before) and I believe it might fit under Christian music…She has a very pretty voice, but I do adore the combination that is the Civil Wars.
Was so happy for Adele! and Foo Fighters for that matter. We’ve been listening to Bon Iver. Poor Sean is confused as to why they were up for new artist. The album connected is his second, and Sean feels that while it is really good, its not as good as the first album. timing I suppose.
the new Corinne Bailey Rae album The Sea came to my attention, so I’ve been listening to it. and Goat Rodeo Sessions just goes with everything I do, they have been on all week while doing schoolwork.
She does have a rich voice, doesn’t she. And Jean Paul’s is great as well, but together they are amazing.
Bon Iver is great! And I’m a big Foo Fighters fan too. They are great to crank up when you are in the mood to just rock the house.
I’ll have to check out Corinne Bailey Rae. The name is vaguely familiar but that is all.
Wow! They are REALLY talented!
And Adele is so ridiculously gifted 😮
I hope you and Mary have a relaxing weekend of music and recuperation <3
We plan on it, thanks Kelly!
Adele is quite amazing. That whole Royal Albert Hall concert is on DVD and I’ve added it to my wishlist.
I like their sound – does anybody think Barton Hollow has a Fleetwood Mac feel? And the guy reminds me of Johnny Depp! Have a good weekend.
Lynn 😀
I’m not sure, I’ll have to think about the Fleetwood Mac thing. I can see it a bit.
Jean Paul does have that Johnny Depp beard and haircut, doesn’t he? I thought the same thing.
Hope you and your wife are feeling better. I’ve been getting flu shots the past seven years and…no flu! Daily Vitamin-C helps, too. And, of course, Music Therapy!
Thanks, we are getting there. Music therapy does help, as does our more healthy eating and vitamins and getting good rest, all of which we are doing on top of the antibiotics.
Lovely. I’d heard of The Civil Wars but hadn’t actually taken the time to listen to them. I have a feeling they will be added to the rotation. As for what I will be listening to this weekend, I sometimes like to match my music to my reading, and since it’s currently P.D. James’s Death Comes to Pemberley I’ve been listening to some Austen-themed music I have. (Classical and vocal music from late 1700s/early 1800s & soundtracks from film adaptations.)
Hope you and your wife both feel better soon!
I just discovered The Civil Wars this weekend, thanks to Kelly, and I am officially a die-hard fan. Gosh, they are just fantastic. So talented and genuine. Hope you’re feeling better!
