(I left this little volunteer evergreen in the yard purposely in the hopes that I could get a Charlie Brown Christmas tree picture like this one)
At Christmas I no more desire a rose
Than wish a snow in May’s new-fangled mirth;
But like of each thing that in season grows.
~William Shakespeare
You go, Bill! Would snow by any other name smell as sweet? Well, anyway, every winter I long for, and never get my fill of, snow. As if to cover the last vestiges of November with a fluffy cotton blanket, the snow began early Thursday afternoon and continued through the wee hours of Friday morning. That is why today you get one of my all-time Friday Favorites: SNOW! All last evening I had the music of the song Snow from the movie White Christmas playing in my head:

(Last night, with flash on to catch the flakes)
Snow
It won’t be long before we’ll all be there with snow
Snow
I want to wash my hands, my face and hair with snow

Snow
I long to clear a path and lift a spade of snow
Snow
Oh, to see a great big man entirely made of snow

(Which I did this morning, lifting more than one spade!)
Where it’s snowing
All winter through
That’s where I want to be
Snowball throwing
That’s what I’ll do
How I’m longing to ski
Through the snow-oh-oh-oh-oh

Those glist’ning houses that seem to be built of snow
Snow
Oh, to see a mountain covered with a quilt of snow

What is Christmas with no snow
No white Christmas with no snow
Snow

I’ll soon be there with snow
I’ll wash my hair with snow
And with a spade of snow
I’ll build a man that’s made of snow
I’d love to stay up with you but I recommend a little shuteye
Go to sleep
And dream
Of snow

We were essentially snowed in as a family last night. Tori suggested we play Monopoly, a game that I have not played for decades. Years ago Scott had bought me the Justice League version of the game so we opened it up and went to it. Instead of properties you have different abilities, and instead of houses and hotels you have powers and superpowers. We played a full game, somewhere around 4 hours of more, buying abilities as we went, no handing out stuff ahead of time. By the end of the night I had completely wiped the women out. The members of the Justice League were completely under my command.

(GL and I, looking intimidating…or maybe just tired.)
I played as Green Lantern and my Power Ring ruled them all (or at least Batman and Green Arrow…the girls’ characters)!

Yes, after all was said and done I had approximately $10,000, all the superpowers, most of the powers, and all of the abilities (properties). Needless to say I really enjoyed the game.

(picture taken before I remembered to turn the ‘candle’ setting on my camera off)
Actually we all had quite alot of fun and the ladies were fantastic sports in their defeat.
Usually I end up tearing up my own yard during winter snowfall…my pickup and I don’t see eye to eye about driving in snow. Last night before going to bed I walked to the front window with the intention of looking out at the magical, blanketed world (An aside…isn’t it so cool how light it is at night when it is snowing? The world positively glows!). Instead I saw a group of teenagers, who may or may not have had a legitimate reason for driving around in the snow at midnight, attempting to tow their car out of my yard. The result, as I suspected, was this:

Oh well, other than that it was a wonderful way to end November and begin December. Just what I needed to amp up the Christmas Spirit! As you may have noticed I have a new header up for the holiday season. I thought the pictures together told a little story…this was a fun one to do. These images are part of a large group of 50’s ads that can be found here, they even have prints for sale.
Don’t forget about joining us for the 2006 G.I.F.T. Challenge (details by clicking either button below):
I hope you enjoyed this Friday Favorite. If not, since you may not be like me, I’ll give you the perspective of another Carl:
A lot of people like snow.
I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.
~Carl Reiner
Happy December!!!

I enjoyed your pictures. I love snow, especially from inside. I left my lights on, outside, all day yesterday and it looked so magical. I got myself an early Christmas present – a polar bear, all in lights, who even rolls his head. Now he looks even more real all covered in snow.
I don’t really like winter, but I was rooting for the STORM OF THE CENTURY as Mix 93.3 kept broadcasting. I couldn’t wait to get home to let Moses outside to go to the bathroom after work. As anticipated, he ran around like a kid in a candy store – frolicking around, putting his face in the snow leaving evidence of the white, powdery flakes on his forehead & nose. He ran, and ran, and ran. Motley even joined in later that evening, when Mike was playing outside with them, by burying his head in the drifts – what dorks!
I went downstairs around 9:30 to put some laundry in the wash. As I was leaving the laundry room, I look out our big window and noticed how bright it was outside. I went and stared outside for quite awhile. It was so cool. It was like daylight outside.
I love your pics!!!
great pics! I love the snow but I’m not looking forward to driving to Blue Springs tonight.
Love the snow pictures – and that skater! I plan to participate in GIFT this year, but haven’t gotten any posts up yet. 🙂
ok. i want that game.
especially, if there’s a Marvel version of it.
we’re supposed to get our first snow this afternoon. i’m definitely not as excited as you. lol
but then, it’s been a gorgeous week in the 60s. i shouldn’t complain.
Here you go Angela: My Marvel Heroes Monopoly
I wish that Razz was that way. He used to love going out in the snow…it used to be hard getting him to come back in. Now he’s terrified and won’t even come to the door all the way. I have to carry him down the back stairs and then he does his business as fast as he can and is right back in, trembling all over. Goof ball. I even scooped some snow a ways out in the yard for him today and he is still in and out as fast as he can do it.
Hopefully the roads will be okay in Blue Springs tonight Jeff. They have went over the main ones once already so hopefully 40 Hwy will be all melted because of that and the traffic today.
I’d like to get a polar bear Pat…I turned my outside lights on really early yesterday as well.
Glad you’re joining in RB!
No fair! I live in Canada, I am MEANT to have snow, and nothing as of yet. 🙁 I love snow, so I am getting very disappointed with the weather.
Oh, and I started your challenge all ready, posted last night. 🙂 (As I keep saying, big fan of winter.)
JenClair asked for pics of people’s reading chairs so here is mine:
It is where I read (not the only place…but how could I post a picture of the toilet?), watch television and movies, sometimes nap, and..since it is big enough for two…snuggle!
Love the snow pictures! We see very little of the real thing, but enjoy seeing snowy scenes!
I chuckled when I saw that Angela wanted the Marvel Comics version of Monopoly–this is right up her alley! In fact, I’m going to look into it myself. 🙂
Ha! You were posting your reading chair as I was writing my commen! I looks like a great place – ottoman and lots of room for books or dogs or human companions. And a nice throw for warmth in the winter weather! Thanks, Carl, for sharing!
I posted the link to Amazon but you might find it cheaper elsewhere.
That throw is something a friend made for me several years ago. It is double thick yarn and is super heavy and super warm. I love it!
Hey man I loved this snow. This is why I have 4WD!! I do the side streets just begging to get stuck. The only thing about it is the 2+ hour drive home. I found out doing side streets gets you home alot faster. It took me only an hour to get home last night. I stopped at Quik Trip for a pepsi, apple pie and a tank full of gas,(I could be a spokesperson for QT) and enjoyed a leisurely drive home, took about an hour. Let it snow!
Mary’s Tracker is 4WD and it does very well in the snow and ice. I took it out for a bit this morning. My truck…not so much. I love it and it was something my dad bought cheap and had fixed and it had almost no miles on it when I got it. 99% of the year its fine. It is just during these few snowstorms that I wish I had something else to drive. But hey, I’m having more fun at home today anyway!!!
Colour me jealous. If we get as much as a cm of snow and we are delighted.
Love the pictures! I am so jealous! I want some snow so badly, but alas, I live in the South. We probably won’t get anything until January and that will be ice. 🙁
Love your reading chair as well. Looks very comfy.
thanks Carl! lol
oooo… there’s a James Bond version too!
hmm.. and I just had a dream about Daniel Craig last night. lol
.. no, it wasn’t dirty.
Love your new banner by the way. Those pictures are great.
Sure Angela…. 😉
Thanks Heather..nice stolen pics. 😉
Oddly enough my terrified dog has decided that maybe it isn’t so bad outside and wants to keep going out….of course he still expects to be carried down the stairs. Evidently he hasn’t figured out that if it isn’t slick coming up the stairs it is not slick going down them either! Doh!
CUH! Some guys have all the luck
Love the C. Brown tree and the reading chair! Snow, snow, glorious snow!
Such beautiful snow pictures! Puts our winter weather in Texas to shame 🙂 We got some flurries but enough for people to freak out yesterday. ha,ha…
I would like to state for the record that I hold you fully responsible for the fact that I now have a craving to watch White Christmas just in order to see the scene where they sing that song… except I can’t because I lent my copy out for a while. Boo.
I would tend to agree more with Carl Reiner, I’m afraid. I don’t mind snow, per se, as long as it stays off the roads. I can’t stand being snowed in; it drives me crazy! And Heather is right. Down here in the dirty South, we tend to get ice more than snow. Ice, which snaps power lines and tree limbs! Ice, which renders you incapable of escaping your own home, which is freezing because you don’t have any electricity because of the fallen trees and power lines!!!
Did I mention I don’t care for ice?
I’m not a big ice fan myself. Although a few years ago we had a massive ice storm that destroyed trees and crippled power…except oddly our side of the street…we were the only ones with power in the neighborhood for a few days. We actually had quite a bit of fun that time because we sat in the back room with all the windows open, read books, and listened to limbs snap, transformers blow, and just watched the awe inspiring destructive power of nature. I’m sure most of the others in town didn’t have the kind of fun that we had.
Sorry Court! I’m wanting to watch the movie now too but will wait with that one for a bit longer.
I can honestly say that I am happy it was freezing up here in Nebraska as that meant it was too cold for snow! And you lucky people farther south got it! 🙂 I don’t mind snow, but I am just not quite ready for it yet! I always do want a white Christmas, though, and it has been ages since we have had one! So in about two weeks time you can send it back up north! I just hope it clears up as I am going to KC next week with my sister to shop at the Plaza (please tell me there is a bookstore there? My sister has her sights set on Macys, but it just doesn’t thrill me in the same way!). Enjoy the snow!
Very large Barnes and Noble on the Plaza. Really fun Urban Outfitters store. I recommend eating at Tom Fooleries…the food is good but its their desserts that are really fun. Z Gallerie is another store on the Plaza that I loooove to shop at. That’s really cool that you’re coming to visit. Does your sis live here?
You’re Charlie Brown tree is adorable. Great Pix!! I enjoyed moseying through your post this morning.
I love the snow pics, so romantic. But, I am happy that I don’t have to deal with it! I could go up toward Lake Tahoe, but I don’t even have chains or snowtires. Once every four-five years we get an inch, and then it’s gone.
Oh wow! I so envy your snow! Christmas never really feels like Christmas for me without snow, and I haven’t had a white Christmas in probably over 10 years 🙁
Great snow pics, Carl. I love it, too, but none so far this year. I cheated and posted a shot of our deck taken a couple of years ago (go here)
Gotta love the snowfall. 🙂
