A Thrilling Halloween

‘Tis the night – the night
Of the grave’s delight,
And the warlocks are at their play;
Ye think that without
The wild winds shout,
But no, it is they – it is they.

~Arthur Cleveland Coxe

Like some spectral wind this month has blown by at an astonishing pace and here it is All Hallow’s Eve. It would be safe to say that with illness and house issues and work that this is the first October in a long time that I have not been able to squeeze every eerie moment out of. I look forward to watching all the scary movies I have missed this month during the long cold winter months ahead. Despite the lack of consistent frights, it has been a scary weekend!

The first was Friday night’s guys’ night out to go see Saw III. A little more gory than the first but an interesting story just the same. Saturday was the second annual Tarts Halloween party (pictures in tomorrow’s post, with a R.I.P. wrap-up), and most scary of all…Sunday!

Sunday afternoon Mary noticed a smell of gas in the basement and a call to the gas company resulted in the man finding 2 places in the pipes and one in the furnace itself in which we had a gas leak. Later than evening when she checked the bank account online we found out that someone had stolen our information and had ran up about $700 out of our checking account in various locations in Texas. Needless to say it was a restless evening. Yesterday found us at home dealing with both issues. Thank God we had 2 potentially warm days in a row so the lack of a heater wasn’t a big deal, and the bank was able to sort out everything quickly and return the money to our account in the morning. A call to a local heating and cooling company resulted in the leaks being fixed and the edition of a new furnace. Eventhough I didn’t have money laying around to rush out and buy a new furnace it really is a blessing in disguise as our old one hadn’t worked well for the past 2 years.

After all that I am looking forward to trick-or-treaters and hopefully to getting back on task in November. I have numerous ideas for posts in my upcoming birthday month and look forward to sharing them with you.

One need not be a chamber to be haunted;
One need not be a house;
The brain has corridors surpassing
Material place.

Hark! Hark to the wind! ‘Tis the night, they say,
When all souls come back from the far away-
The dead, forgotten this many a day!

If you’re in the neighorhood, come calling. We have some good candy to give away this Halloween night.

Happy Halloween everyone!

A house is never still in darkness to those who listen intently; there is a whispering in distant chambers, an unearthly hand presses the snib of the window, the latch rises. Ghosts were created when the first man awoke in the night.

  1. I was prepared to rant and have a hissy fit about finding no posts here since last Thursday but now that I know why you’ve been MIA I’ll just get over it. Glad your gas leak situation is safely resolved.

  2. Glad all the problems have been resolved. Here’s hoping you have a great Hallowe’en to make up for the hassle.

  3. Wow, you’re lucky to have caught both those things when you did, and am glad that both turned out to be somewhat less than disasters.

  4. Welcome back, Carl! I’ve noticed a smell of gas by the back door…I figured, hey, we need a new house anyway, as long as Dad & the dogs are ok! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

  5. Okay I think you’ve had plenty of tricks played on you this Halloween. So sorry to hear abou tthe stolen bank account stuff.

    Glad to hear things are getting better and hope you can have a happy Halloween evening!

  6. My goodness, Carl! I’m sorry your weekend was so scary in an unfun way.

    But I’m glad that all is being fixed.

    Someone stole my cc info about two months ago and ran up about $1100 before they were stopped. Yikes. We got the money back, but still, I know the feeling.

    At least you’ll be toasty warm this winter, and probably the furnace is more efficient so you’ll even save on heating bills.

    Happy Halloween.

  7. Yep we have had all that happen. We did however budget a new furnace/AC so that helped. Had fun Friday with Saw 3. (The pigs were the best!) We got nailed for $1000 but the ole UMB caught it before it hit the account. Look forward to some movie nights and pizzas and snow!

  8. I’m with iliana, that’s enough tricks! Time for some treats.

    Nice Hallowe’en verses! I’m going to have to haunt…er, hunt up one.

  9. Gas leaks? How scary! Glad there were no explosions or poisonings. And what a drag about the checking account thing. Hope it all gets sorted out. In the mean time, have a great Halloween!

  10. I’m sorry about all the headaches, but want to thank you for the RIP challenge. I read two books and a whole mess of short stories. I had a really creepy time! šŸ˜€

  11. Carl, you made the Tarts Halloween a wonderful time this year. I really enjoyed the pumpkin carving and the trick or treaters enjoyed my handiwork (and yours!).

    So thankful that the theft was addressed quickly AND most importantly that you all are safe after the gas/furnace incident. These things never happen at a good time, but I’m glad the weekend was warm. And think of how much $ you’ll save with a more efficient furnace this winter! And you all are SAFE.

  12. I’v been sending you positive energy this week. I’m so glad to hear that you had heat before it got cold last night and that the bank handled that so fast. I’d been so excited about Halloween all month; even put lights up so the little trick or treaters would know I had candy. And I had three! I’ll bring you some of the very large amount that I have left. It sounds like you could use some chocolate.
