Steel Salvation and the R.I.P.ping Winners

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don’t like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.
~ Bill Shankly

And so the autumn nourishment of the American male begins again. It is football season folks. Life is complete.

After a year’s hiatus from Fantasy Football I am once again fielding a team. The Bugeaters are out of retirement and on the road to the championship.

Thank you Pittsburg Steelers Defense for stepping up tonight and giving me a good point start for my opening game against Jeff’s Right Hands of Doom (whose Hellboy inspired name is no doubt lost on everyone else in our league). James sends his thanks as well (since he also has the Pitt “D” in his league) as they struck a double blow for him, earning him points for his team while simultaneously taking points away from his opponents QB.

I have said several times and will mention here again how thrilled I am with the response to the first annual (I hope) R.I.P. Autumn Challenge. The entire idea started with the thought that I would like to give another prize away after my last contest as I love doing gifts for others and attempting to make them unique and special. As I thought of this and the longing I had to start getting into seasonally appropriate reading now that September was approaching the idea for the R.I.P. challenge was born. I am in awe of the response and the enormous list of book ideas that I have gotten out of this as well as all the wonderful new blog friends that I have “met” over the past week. I look forward to reading all your reviews and discussing everyone’s progress with the challenge.

My original intention was to have one prize winner. I did mention though that I might increase the winners based on response. Since the response was so overwhelming I decided to draw 6 names out of the list of those who signed up by the deadline in order to win prizes. The first two will for sure get the promised Dracula book and if I can find more that are in good shape I will award those to the other winners. Otherwise, the 4 additional winners will receive books that fit in with the spirit of the challenge. No doubt each package will arrive at its destination lovingly prepared by yours truly with something unique and personal in each one. I hope to finish these and have them sent off by early next week. So without further ado, the winners…as drawn by my wife and I are:

1. Heather from A High and Hidden Place
2. Litlove
3. Brandon
4. Susan from IBuyBooks
5. Dovegreyreader
6. Mysfit

Congrats to you all! Please send me an email at poegeek@gmail.com with your addresses. Please send it as it should be written on the envelope to insure that I get it all correct.

Remember, there will be at least one more special gift drawn out of the names of those who finish the challenge by Oct. 31st.

I plan to put out an R.I.P. newsletter within the next week that, among other things, includes a complete list of the books that all the participants have chosen to read plus any that were recommended as potential reads. It is a long and wonderful list.

It isn’t too late to join in the challenge. People are still signing up, so tell your friends! And thanks again.

  1. Yay!! My goodness me, the last time I won something I was about 11 years old! Thank you so much Carl – can’t wait for the package to arrive…

  2. Congrats to all the winners (including the Pittsburgh defense – he, he). Carl does give the best gifts!

  3. It could be argued that we’re all winners for participating! (I know, I know, that sounds cheesy, that’s just the kind of girl I am.) It’s actually not as painful as I feared it might be to tear myself away from non-fiction for the challenge.

  4. I agree that we’re all winners….the list of fantastic books I have to read that I had never heard of until this challenge is long and is the best of rewards!!!

  5. Congrats to all the winners!

As for the Pittsburgh defense they were awesome last night. Needless to say I was up late last night calling the Seattle defensive players making sure they up to the challenge this weekend. 🙂

  6. I’m nervous…considering the fact that they are playing the Lions they could have a monster of a day!

I’ve got to initiate you right by beating the stuffing out of you this weekend. Can’t go letting you win your first game in the league…you might get the big head.

  7. Congrats to the winners! 🙂

Look forward to the newsletter! I’m going to start on my first RIP book this Sunday, after my upheaval, should help to round off a tiresome and tiring week in a positive way.

  8. congrats to everyone who one! and congrats to everyone for picking such cool books! i never win – i’m so excited!! thanks carl v. for putting this all together (and to his wife for helping 😉 )

  9. No Elizabeth, I am not a Steelers fan per se…although I was rooting for them in the playoffs and Superbowl last year. I am a Chiefs fan, have been a Cowboys fan since I first learned about football in the third grade, and like a number of other teams better than others.

I do, however, have the Pittsburg Defense as my fantasty football team defense and so I will be rooting for Steeler defensive miracles all year long.

  10. Oh I’m so excited! I haven’t won anything since I was 8 years old and won a copy of ET on videotape. Watched that thing to pieces too.

Thanks Carl!!! (Hope you got my email!)

  11. How wonderful for the winners. And for the rest of us, too, who are reading in the challenge. I am totally enjoying myself. Barely into Dracula, but am loving it.

  12. Congratulations to all the winners and a special thank you for enlarging my list of must read soon books.

  13. Congratulations to the winners! I am looking forward to that book list! Because I don’t have enough to read……

  14. Congrats to the winners! *is jealous*

The newsletter sounds like a great idea! You know, we should have these challenges all year round. 🙂 I made my first RIP post today. Huzzah!

  15. I add my congrats and echo the sentiment that participating is enough to make me feel like a winner. Thank you again, Carl!

  16. Yeah for me! And poor Carl had to remind me. I know I passed by that post, but I probably focused too much on the Steelers part. You see, I live outside of Detroit. Where the Detroit Lions play. So anything related to football and I glaze over. Carl, my address is on its way!
