Are you ready?

Well…almost!!! With less than two weeks to go before the start of the football season [bows down in thanks] we had our live draft for the fantasy football team last night.

After taking a year off to rest and recuperate from the inherent annoyances of fantasy football I was dragged back kicking and screaming into the league. Last night 12 of us, including my friend Jeff, got together at various locations across the U.S. to do our draft. James was gracious enough to bring over his laptops and that in conjunction with my PC and Jeff’s laptop meant that we had 4 computers going at the same time in my small computer room….which you’ve seen if you read Friday’s post! James was actually our saviour for the evening! Storms caused a massive city-wide internet crash about two thirds of the way through our draft and thankfully James had his Sprint wireless or we would’ve had to do our last several rounds by phone. James also brought over some fantastic BBQ and beer. Thank you James!!!

I’m fairly happy with my lineup for the season (starters):

QB: Tom Brady from the NE Patriots
RB: Tiki Barber from the NY Giants
RB: Corey Dillon from the NE Patriots
WR: Plaxico Burress from the Pitt. Steelers
WR: Eddie Kennison from the KC Chiefs
TE: Alge Crumpler from the Atl Falcons
K: Josh Brown from the Seattle Seahawks’
Def: Pittsburg Steelers

Hopefully it will be a good season

And last but not least it was my brother-in-law Mike’s birthday on Friday and we got together yesterday to celebrate the beginning of his last year in the 20’s. Happy belated Birthday, Mike! You are a terrific edition to the family. On a side note Mike and I beat the women folk twice in Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture yesterday…a game that included my rendition of the old song “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”. Good times!

Happy Monday everyone!!!

  1. Look at all these awards Serenity won, and yet no sequel. *sigh*

Old Man’s War looks interesting. Whats it about?

  2. Exactly Fence, we need a sequel!

I’m about 120 pages into the 320 page book. A brief description is that our protagonist is 75 years old, an age in which one can choose to join the army, leave earth, and be shuttled off to the great unknown with the promise of becoming young again. The condition is that one has to serve in the military for at least 2 years but can be conscripted to 10 years if there is an emergency. If you survive you can get a generous homestead of your own on one of the colonized planets.

There is a much longer description here that, for me, reveals some of the details that I already know but might not have wanted to know going in. It is where I heard of the book though. I’m enjoying it. It is humorous and adventurous on the line of some of Robert Heinlein’s work. I was interested because the description seemed to me to have the flavor of Harry Harrison’s work. It’s a fairly easy, breezy read and I am enjoying it…enough that I will get the second book in the series. Not sure if it’s a true sequel or just another novel set in the same universe.

I read alot of fantasy and miss reading science fiction sometimes so I’m really having fun with this one.

  3. Just an fyi, for some reason Nic says in that review that this is the second installment but this is Scalzi’s first novel so I’m not sure what she is referencing there.

  4. The draft was fun and I’m putting my money behind Carl’s team this year. Go Bugeaters!

I’m with Fence too on Serenity. It’s a shame there’s no sequel.

Happy 29th! birthday Mike! It’s been great to know you and Abby. I hope Motley and Moses got you something nice too. Also is it just me or aren’t those sheep a little chubby.

Also since you’re reading some Sci-fi right now Carl have you ever read Dune? I’m listening to the book called Road to Dune right now written by his son and Kevin J Anderson. It’s pretty cool so far if you’ve read the original six novels. I read them back in high school and really enjoyed them. The movie with Sting was horrible too. The recent Sci-fi mini-series were good recently but the books themselves are great. just curious.

  5. The last post makes no sense Carl. please edit it for me. I only got 4 and half hours sleep last night. thanks buddy.

  6. Editing is done..

And thanks for shaming me even more. It isn’t enough that I have to broadcast to the world that I am just getting through LOTR for the first time but now I have to admit that I have never read a one of these sci fi classics.

As such I have to admit that I love the movie with Sting (since I have no basis of comparing it to the books that helps) and thought the Dune remake mini-series a few years back was good but I didn’t like how that actor portrayed Duke Paul Atreides as such a whiner. I loved the mother in it and that the longer series got to see her part extended more. She was a much more powerful version of the character than in the Sting movie. Anyway, sorry….I can’t help it that I just have a thing for that movie. We just netflixed it not long ago and watched it with Tori.

  7. And save your money, I’ve never won anything in this league and I don’t think I have anything magical going for me this year!

  8. Yes they did. Our friend Jules is always saying how much she wanted to take River and wash her greasey looking hair.

  9. Hi Carl! Thanks for dropping by my blog 🙂

I decided that this is the year that I am going to start watching football. However, being new to the sport, I have a lot to learn so I will be dropping by your blog a lot to read your posts on the football season. My husband does not like football so it seems like I’m going to have to do the footwork alone – maybe I can find a way for him to get interested, too?

I really have to rent Serenity. I’ve heard nothing but good things about both the movie and the short-lived show.

Love your blog and lay-out!! Take care! 🙂

  10. I highly recommend renting the series first. It is a wonderful series and makes one appreciate the movie so much more.

I’ve found out in my life that there is almost nothing harder than to get a man who doesn’t like football to start liking it. But a woman who likes football is cool beyond measure!!!

Thanks for the visit and the kind words Amelia!
