Birthday Cakes and Wedding Bells

Growing old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you have not committed.
~Anthony Powell

Wanted to take a quick moment and wish James a ‘happy birthday’. James and his wife Jules were the first friends we connected with 8 years ago when we made the permanent pilgrimage from Tulsa, OK to Kansas City. They have both been an integral part of our lives since that first fateful meeting.

James, hope you have a wonderful time at the birthday/bachelor party on the Alpine Slides tonight and look forward to celebrating with you when you return from Colorado.

And why, you ask, is James in Colorado? Wedding bells are ringing, that’s why. James’best friend since childhood is getting hitched.

Rob and Sarah are tying the knot tomorrow afternoon.

There is nothing nobler or more admirable than when two people who see eye to eye keep house as man and wife, confounding their enemies and delighting their friends.
~ Homer

Please join me in wishing them all the best. They are a wonderful individuals and a very sweet couple. Congrats you two, look forward to seeing pics on the net in the near future!

Come live with me and be my love,
And we will some new pleasures prove
Of golden sands and crystal brooks,
With silken lines and silver hooks.

~John Donne

Happy Birthday,James and Blessed Union, Rob and Sarah!

  1. Happy Birthday, James. I just love that picture of you and the girls. All the older girls with their “funny faces” and Baby being too cool to stoop to such a level.

Congrats, Sarah and Rob! I am so excited for you two. God bless you on your wedding day and in the years to come.

  2. Hope you are having a wonderful birthday in lovely CO, James! We miss you guys. Even though I don’t talk to Jules every day, just knowing you all are gone makes me feel a little lonely.

Hope you enjoy the wedding immensely! Congrats Rob and Sarah!

Jules, I hope you have fun in that dress!!!

  3. Happy Birthday James! Have fun surfing the Rockies on your butt!!!!!! And remember,
we won’t think of you as an “old fart” if you use the brakes on your alpine sled!!

Congrats to your friends – Rob & Sarah, on their wedding! I wish them all the best!

  4. I am waiting in our hotel room for James to pick us up for the rehearsal dinner. I thought I’d plug in the computer and see what’s going on. This was a very sweet post. James and the guys had a great time today. I told the girls I’d take them site seeing while Daddy is out playing. They said “No way, we want to swim!”. I spent the day pool side reading. Very relaxing.

We are going to take a three hour ride in a tram on Saturday to the top of Pike’s Peak! I hope none of us pass out. It’s over 16,000 feet up! They say you can see four states.

I am looking forward to wearing my dress Karen. There’s an Irish Pub across the street. James and I were day dreaming about leaving the sleeping girls in the room and running off! I think it’s time for a nanny!!! When you are out of town, Karen, I’m lonely too.

I am blessed to be married to my best buddy. James and I really love hanging out together. I am very thankful to have such a good man. Happy Birthday, Babe!!

Rob and Sarah are a great couple. I am really looking forward to watching them tie the knot tomorrow!!! They have a great life ahead of them!!

  5. Pike’s Peak is fun, went there when I was a kid. Hope you all enjoy it, the wedding, and the rest of your trip.

  6. Pike’s Peak is fun! We went up and had a ball just visiting with people all around us from all over the world. We saw a lot of wildlife. Unfortunately the fog rolled in when we got to the top and you couldn’t see a thing! I remember it being soooo cold and it was a hot day in Co. Springs. I needed a jacket and when you walked across the top you were so out of breath. It was fun.

  7. Happy Birthday,James. Have a great time in Colorado-it is so pretty up in the mountains. Take a jacket on top of Pike’s Peak-it gets cold and windy up there sometimes. You have such a nice little family-we enjoy visiting with you when we are in KC.

  8. Thank you, Carl for this sweet post.

I’m having a great time and the slides were a lot of fun.

Abby, I did use the brake. That’s pretty sad isn’t it? :p

Anyway, any trip with my family is a great one. Thanks everyone for the advice for the top of pikes peak. I wasn’t sure what the weather was going to be like up there. I’m glad there is a good chance we will see some wildlife. That will help keep the kids from getting bored on the way up.

  9. Don’t worry James. The one and only time I rode the alpine slides I used the brake the whole time!

  10. We made it back at 8:40 last night.

The wedding was very pretty. Sarah’s church is gorgeous and perfect for a lovely wedding. Hopefully Rob and Sarah will post pics on their blogs when they get back and settled. James really enjoyed being Best Man. The outdoor reception was at a beautiful place and the food was yummy. Weddings are a good reminder of our love and commitment to our spouse.

Pikes Peak was a fun adventure. We didn’t take the tram but took the Burban to the top instead! I didn’t know I’d need a sedative for the trip up! Toward the top I couldn’t look out my window anymore because all I saw was a drop off down the side of the mountain! Going down wasn’t scary at all. James had the truck in the lowest gear, but our brakes were really hot and smelly. We didn’t pass the brake heat gun test on the way down and had to pull over for 40 minutes to let them cool.

There was a young Christian couple we met at the top. (Students at Focus on the Family) They had hiked all the way to the top! We gave them a ride back down, which the kids got a kick out of. Lydia and the guy got real carsick going down but fortunately no one threw up!

When we got there the view was STUNNING. It was crystal clear. I was in awe of the range. My family immediately had to go to the stupid little gift shop to pee and shop. When we came back out we were completely enveloped in clouds. I thought about crying. I didn’t get any pictures beforehand.

I guess I should do my own blog post, huh?

  11. I thought the same thing Angela! Sounds funny. Although he did use the word “sweet” above. That made me laugh, cuz it’s such a Julie thing to say. I’m rubbing off on him, I guess.

After reading my comments, I realized my thoughts really bounced around a lot. That’s what happens when you try to do something with screaming kids chasing one another through the room.

  12. Can’t believe you drove up and down it! Wild. We took the tram when I was a kid and we went up there. Sorry you didn’t get pics while you were up there but glad you guys all got to go anyway.

  13. Happy belated birthday James! Sounds like your birthday and your trip were wonderful. Keri and I are looking forward to taking our kids out to Colorado someday soon too.

  14. Happy b-day, Jimmy!

Wow, we’re back and adjusting to the working world again. Blog posts are overdue but coming. 🙂

  15. Welcome back and congrats once again Rob and Sarah. Look forward to seeing pics on both of your sites!

  16. Oh, and Tori and Mary got some of the chocolate covered coffee beans from Jules and are very appreciative and commend your good taste.
