Please Leave a Message

Pardon my absence. Exploring Middle-earth. Return date unknown. Please Leave a Message.

My wife mentioned this morning “you’ve really been getting into Lord of the Rings lately!”. And she is right. My routine over the past week or so has been to watch a little of the ‘making of’ stuff on the extended edition DVD’s each morning before work, some when I come home from work, and some before bed. I’m into disk one of Return of the King right now. I am also reading snippets of The Simarillion each day. That book is great…its like reading a history book about a world that you love. Anyway, just wanted to post an explanation for the lack of regular daily posts lately. Go back to your regularly scheduled lives…and thanks for reading.

  1. The Two Towers was on the telly here recently. Didn’t watch it all, but let me tell you, watching Middle Earth interspersed with Hanibal Lector in Red Dragon is a bit of a strange experience

  2. I haven’t seen Remington Steele forever…I used to love that show and because of it have always enjoyed Pierce Brosnan in everything he’s done.

And yes, Fence…that would indeed be an odd combination of shows!

  3. I still haven’t seen those movies (for shame, I know) or read the books (for even greater shame, I know…).
    I’ll be quiet now.
    Enjoy.

  4. I have tried to read the books, but there’s just too much detail for me to pay attention to , and my ADHD causes me to glaze over. The films, however, captivated me! Enjoy all of the “making of” stuff!!

  5. Weird coincidence, Carl, as I just started watching the appendices in Return of the King the other night. I’m on #6, just watched the doc called “filming ROTK” (or something like that). It was amazingly moving to see all those sad, sad farewells. All these actors and tech people totally moved to tears at the thought of moving on with their lives. They really were a close community.

  6. I have only watched the ROTK extras once so its really fun watching them again. As amazing as the three films were in themselves the structure of the extras is equally amazing and they are all quite touching in their own way, especially ROTK. Wait until you see the documentary on the kid who inspired “Into the West”…nary a dry eye in the house!

For whatever reason the fact that these people dedicated so much of their lives to this project and the fact that it eventually ended and they had to go back to whatever they were doing or on to the next thing has really always resonated with me. I’ve found it inspiring and profoundly sad at the same time. I guess I can recall times when I’ve felt especially close and connected…senior year of high scholl was one of those times…and how sad it was when it was all over…how easy it can be to fall into the trap of feeling that you have to try to recreate that feeling rather than enjoying moving on to the next phase.

In some ways I can’t imagine how the cast and crews’ lives will ever be the same…for many they will never ever have another experience like that and I find that fascinating and bitter-sweet. I have the same feelings about the fact that last year’s Christmas release of the extended edition of ROTK marked the end of the trilogy and the end of an amazing era of movie-making.

  7. I love when you get so caught up in something like that. Are you having dreams of Middle Earth yet? I get that way when I read David Eddings’ books.

  8. When I clicked on your blog tonight, I gasped when I saw the new header…awesome!!! I’m glad you’re getting into it so, glad to know someone else in the world besides me is so entranced by it all!

  9. I’ve been really into the movies for the past 4 years or so but am really excited to be going back and getting into the books. I needed to get rid of the Halloween header and don’t really have time to do something super cool or detailed with the header but this looks okay and fits my mood at the moment.

  10. Stopping by to say hello….

It is obvious from “listening” to your passion about LOTR that I have indeed been missing something.

I have never read the books, nor have I seen any of the movies. However, many years ago I did see a threatre production. I recall it being quite magical.

Would you suggest tto begin with the books or the films?

  11. Since I started with the films and since they are so incredible I would suggest starting with those. If you like movies at all I think you’ll be amazed with these and in as full of a world as Tolkien creates it is probably easier to wrap your head around the world and characters via film.

Thanks for the visit Michele, I enjoy your site and the many and varied entertaining topics each day!

  12. I too had an easier time with the movies than I did with the books…but I’m slightly obsessive compulsive so I read all the books all the way through before I watched all three moveis! What an embarassing admission! {blushing}

  13. Its not an embarrasing admission at all! I read the Hobbit and started Fellowship before the first movie…Fellowship…came out and then decided that since I hadn’t already read the books I might as well just hold off and not be in the place where I had just read the books and was comparing them to the movies. I enjoy having watched the movies first because, fortunately, they did such a wonderful job with the characters that now I’m even more inclined to read the books.

  14. Wow, great new photos fused into your header at the top. You always make it look so perfect.
LOL about the Remington Steele talk. Man, I loved that show. Uh, anyway, I better finish up this message before *beeeeeep*. 😉

  15. Thanks Mary…I actually am not thrilled with it but it does the job for now until I decide to put something Christmas-y up.

  16. well, if you run into Tom Bombadil on your wanderings, tell him “hi” for me and that i miss him – otherwise, may the road of the imagination always rise to meet your feet.

    Happy Trails!

  17. Mary, I agree with you in regards to this month’s banner too. You need to help your husband work on his accepting compliments skills. 🙂

  18. Just for the record, it was not my Mary who complimented me on the banner…though “Mary” might actually have a husband who needs work on his compliment skills…I’m not sure. 🙂 And there’s nothing wrong with being realistic about one’s computer skills…lets not forget we are in a world where 5 year olds program computers. My photoshop skills are very, very weak. But I’m grateful for the compliments nonetheless.
