‘Tis international Talk Like a Pirate Day! I expect the lot of ye to go to your places of employment garbed in all your pirate finery, prepared to pepper your conversations with the salty dialogue of the pirate! Spend the day lootin and pillaging. Answer every other question with the phrase “Arggh!”. Do not hesitate to tell your co-workers to “swab the poopdeck” and make sure that you threaten at least three peers that you’re going to make them “walk the plank” before days end. If your boss annoys you then you may want to intimate that you’ll soon be sending him to “Davy Jones’ locker”. If you’re feeling reckless refer to your significant other as a “saucy wench”. Feel free to take a peek at the Pirate Glossary if you need help filling your day with pirate lingo.
Really want to get into the Talk Like a Pirate Day festivities? Go and get yourself a pirate name and you’ll be the envy of all!

Tonight’s entertainment should be a reviewing of Pirates of the Caribbean, one of the best pirate movies of recent date. Late last week I sat down to watch Peter Pan with my daughter.

I hadn’t seen it and was quite impressed. The actor and actress who played Peter Pan and Wendy were both wonderful and Jason Isaacs was entertaining as Mr. Darling/Captain Hook. The special effects were first rate! If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it, especially on this piratical day!

For the literary pirate I recommend:

I purchased The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists: A Novel for Mary for Christmas last year and it was hilarious fun. A Monty Python on the high seas…with scientists, of course.
For those buccaneers who prefer their books with less words and more pictures I point you to Scurvy Dogs. This five issue comic series is one of the funniest comics I’ve ever read. Chock full of good pirate and monkey fun!

Don’t be a bilge-sucking blaggard…go forth a speak like only a true pirate can! And tell ’em Sealegs Bonney sent ye!
ARRRR! ye scurvy dogs, I be the Dred Pirate Scarlett and we be off to fight ROUS’s
oh and Sealegs Bonny, ye be a fleabitten landlubber that ye don’ know this be an internation holiday!!!
Aye Cap’n Scarlett, a mangy cur I be for Americanizing a global holiday. I have made ammends though I doubt that will keep me from walking the plank.
And Princess Bride is definitely a good addition to the movies to watch on International Talk Like a Pirate Day! It is after all the story of the Dread Pirate Roberts!
aye me hearty, Hook be a good one to watch as well, as Tink be givin a big old Peter Pan instructions on how to be like a pirate ear’y in t’ film
I am now “Bloody Sal”
It is certainly not the prettiest nickname…
I’m all for the pirate day if it includes an afternoon nap.
And, of course, there’s always Ice Pirates.
Arrr, belly up to the bar and poor me a warm musty one!
All good pirates ships incorporate a nap time, Bloody Sal! Especially after a few rounds of “yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum”.
omg – you know ice pirates? i loved that movie…
Ice Pirates is a great movie. Although I wouldn’t want to watch it again, as I’m afraid it would be cheesy now.
Speaking of cheesy 80s sci-fi, I’ve got V on my netflix queue. I’m hoping it won’t be silly now, seeing it as an adult.
Sink Me! I’d not be knowin th’ holiday, Cap’n!
I’m off to pillage and wench!
~mg “the Red”
Gargh! I Blackspot Rose do be luving de smell of salt water in the morning agh
I actually saw Ice Pirates in the theatre! Ages me, doesn’t it?!?!
I’d worry about V as well as I can’t imagine it holds up over time, but I’d be interested to hear what you think afterwards.
Muppet Treasure Island is another fine pirate film! Tim Curry makes an excellent bad guy and how could you ever go wrong with a swashbuckling frog?!?!
Indeed, how could you. Can’t talk like a pirate, I’m afraid, but I’m loving all these displays. Arrr!
(feeble attempt)
Do I detect a bit of French accent to that ‘Arrr!’ Anne? A bonnie lass like yerself can surely speak a bit o’ pirate with the rest of us.
Back on an entertainment note, I love all those episodes of Spongebob with Davy Jones in them…destined to be cartoon classics!
Aye, matey, but I was thinkin’ this day was occurin’ already this year. Blimey, but I was wrong! I’m just a land-lubber, anyway!
sorry, I couldn’t get past the first pic you posted of Cap’n Jack Sparrow and then it was hard to do pirate talk with drool, you know?
Don’t feel bad Nat…er Smythe, I had this day written on my calendar and still had to be reminded by seeing it on Fence’s site.
I suspected that might be a problem, Janet. No one wants to drown in a sea of pirate drool so all is forgiven.
i missed pirate day 🙁
but you forgot another great pirate movie: Cutthroat Island!
Geena Davis & Matthew Modine.. great pair.
i need to rent that again.
Indeed, I haven’t seen Cutthroat Island in a long while. I really like Geena Davis alot. I especially enjoyed her in that political romantic comedy with Michael Keaton they did years ago…can’t remember what its called. That being said I’m not at all interested in her new tv series.
Angela, feel free to talk like a pirate anytime you like!
aye matey
