And like the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse we descended on the local AMC Theatre to see Batman Begins…of course for me it was Batman Begins …again… er…whatever. Actually it was more like 4 guys who could stand to lose a couple pounds, at least 3 of whom had bellies full of Mexican food, pulling ourselves up the aisle briefly before a visit to the snack bar.
Anyway, and this is no surprise, Batman Begins was just as entertaining on a second viewing. I enjoyed seeing it with James, Tom, and Jeff. All regular readers/commentors and good friends. Jeff pointed out something I missed the first time around and that was the nod to Jeph Loeb (the commissioner was named Loeb). For those of you who aren’t comic geeks, Jeph Loeb has written some of the best comic stories over the last several years, many about Batman.
The Long Halloween with artist Tim Sale and the Hush series with Jim Lee are 2 excellent Batman sagas.
Another excellent Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale comic series is Spiderman: Blue which tells, in remarkable fashion, the story of Peter Parker’s first love, Gwen Stacey, and his second love, Mary Jane Watson.
I’m not a huge Superman fan (I’m only 5’6 and 1/4″ tall….sorry that was bad) but another great Loeb/Sale combination is Superman for All Seasons. Jeff owns an original piece of artwork from this one and it is very cool.
All great comic reads that can be purchased at your local comic shop or checked out from the local library…purty pictures and purty words…ya can’t beat that!
Thanks guys, I had a great time tonight.
And last but not least on this post-comic book Wednesday, and the reason for the title of this post, Mike Mignola’s 2 year hiatus has ended and Hellboy: The Island #1 came out today! I can’t wait to read it! As HB himself would say, “BOOM!”.
Can’t believe I got the reference in the title before you explained it… Who am I and what did they do to me?
Bravo Anne! 🙂
i did check out spidey blue & supes for all seasons a few weeks ago.. don’t remember if i told you..
they were great.. especially the spidey one.
Angela? Mary?
I agree Carl, the movie was just as good the second time around – i was stoked it was so good. i really liked the guy who played the scarecrow – i wonder, if they’re going to do the joker in the sequal do you think that Harley Quin will be involved? I know she only became part of the comic books after her introduction in Batman the animated series- but she’s the best!
As a semi-off-the subject question, carl, have you ever read Watchmen by Alan Moore and DC Comics? It’s fantastic!
Mysfit. The “official” word looks like the next film will definitely include the Joker. If they miss out of the opportunity to bring Harley Quinn into the mix then they are fools because I think Nolan would do an excellent job with writing her character….and yes, she is one of the best. I actually prefer the female characters in the DC universe to the male although I do really like Batman.
I was sent Watchmen not too long ago and have it on a pile of ‘must read’ books and comics. I’ve read alot of Moore’s comics and he is a brilliant writer. Its unfortunate that LXG the movie was such a mess because the comics, “graphic novels”, are amazing.
Last night was fun as hell, boy am I tired. I enjoyed the sound in this one much better than my previous experience(s). Liam N. just can’t survive through a whole movie anymore.
haven’t seen it yet. have grand intentions of seeing it in IMAX 3D down in Atlantic City. sometime soon, i hope. tho i may break down & see it in a regular theater first. depends on my willpower.
oops.. that was me..
Great time last night, Carl, Tom, and James.
Batman Begins is easily the best of the Batman films. In fact I didn’t really enjoy any of the Batman films but the first one and even that doesn’t hold up over time compared to this one. Keri and I have already decided we have to go see this one again and we’re going to see it on IMAX next. Michael Caine as Alfred and Gary Oldham as Gordon were perfectly cast. I also really enjoyed Morgan Freeman’s character. He may pop up in a lot of bad movies but he’s always great in his scenes atleast.
Can’t wait for War of the Worlds, Serenity, and DUKES OF HAZARD ( I’m sorry I loved this show growing up and I’m still a kid at heart ).
I can’t wait for Dukes either. I thought ‘no way’ until I saw the trailer and then that ol’ nostalgic feeling came back and now I can’t wait to see it. Looks fun.
