“It was a dark and stormy night…”
Or at least I wish it was, rather than a warm, sunshiny day. Despite the weather refusing to cooperate with my gothic mood, the calendar does not lie, ladies and gentlemen. It is indeed that time of year where two short months are dedicated to reveling in all things creepy, eerie, mysterious, gothic, horrifying, suspenseful and strange.
It is time to celebrate things that go bump in the night; that favorite detective that always gets his man, or woman, in the end; that delicious chill of a creak on the stairs, of the rogue waiting in the dark, of the full moon and the flit of bats wings.
As I wrote last year:
“Some of my earliest reading memories were collections of Peanuts, borrowed from the local library. I would pour over them, finding humor in the strangest of places, laughing aloud. That early exposure to the work of Charles Schultz cultivated a deep and abiding passion for his creations.
And that phrase, “It was a dark and stormy night…” tickled my imagination with thoughts of moonlight and darkness and things that go bump in the night.
Perhaps that was also the beginning of my passion for I what I lump under a broad personal definition of gothic literature: dark nights; decaying, haunted castles; menacing forests; pervasive gloom; ancient prophecies; damsels in distress (or at least at the wrong place in the wrong time); blood-curdling screams…stories with atmosphere so thick you could cut it with a knife.
It was a desire to celebrate and share that love of the elements of gothic fiction that inspired me to create the first R.I.P. Challenge, five years ago.
Readers Imbibing Peril, that is what it is all about. I hope you’ll consider joining us on this more eerie road less traveled.
Walk this way.”
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
Though the weather outside ain’t frightful, this type of reading makes September and October delightful. I know that as I have gathered together books for this, the fifth annual R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril Challenge, I have felt that chill up my spine and an anticipation that was hard to put on hold until now.
There are two simple goals for the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril V Challenge:
1. Have fun reading.
2. Share that fun with others.
As I do each and every year, there are multiple levels of participation that allow you to be a part of R.I.P. V without adding the burden of another commitment to your already busy lives. There is even a one book only option for those who feel that this sort of reading is not their cup of tea but want to participate all the same.
R.I.P. V officially runs from September 1st through October 31st. But lets go ahead and break the rules. Lets start today!!!
Multiple perils await you. You can participate in just one, or participate in them all.

Peril the first:
Read four books, any length, that you feel fits my very broad definition of scary. It could be Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming or Edgar Allan Poe…or anyone in between.

Peril the second:
Read two books of any length that you believe fit within the challenge.

Peril the third:
We all want you to participate. This peril involves reading one book that fits within the R.I.P. definition.

I am a big fan of short stories and my desire for this is perhaps no greater than this time of the year. I see Poe and Lovecraft in my future for sure. You can read short stories any time during the challenge. When I can, I like to read short stories over the weekend and post about them around that time. Feel free to do this however you want, but if you review short stories on your site, please link to those reviews on the Book Review site.

This year I have added an addition Peril, and that is for those who also like to watch suitably scary, eerie, mysterious gothic fare during this time of year. It may be something on the small screen or large. It might be a television show, like Dark Shadows, or your favorite film. If you are so inclined, please post links to any R.I.P.-related viewing you do on to the book review site as well.
You may participate in one or all of the various Perils. My one rule: enjoy yourself!
The R.I.P. V. Challenge does not require you to read from a pre-selected list of books, but like many of you I love to get ideas from what others are thinking of reading. If you want to include a pool of potential reads when you sign up, either in the comments or on your own sign up post on your blog (not required for participation), please do!
My pool of potential R.I.P. V Reads includes:
1. Tales of Terror from the Tunnel’s Mouth ~Chris Priestley
2. The Perfume of the Lady in Black ~Gaston Leroux
3. The Woman in White ~Wilkie Collins
4. The Fall: Book two of The Stain trilogy ~Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan
5. The Simple Art of Murder ~Raymond Chandler
6. The Vanishing of Katharina Linden ~Helen Grant
7. The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag ~Alan Bradley
8. Murder is My Business ~Brett Halliday
9. The Historian ~Elizabeth Kostova (on my list every year…will this be the one?)
10. House of Mystery comics (quite a bit far behind on my reading of this one)
and of course there are always re-reads that I would like to get to:
11. The Graveyard Book ~Neil Gaiman
12. The Thirteenth Tale ~Diane Setterfield
13. Dracula ~Bram Stoker
14. Scary Godmother comics ~Jill Thompson
Plus I have collections of Poe and Lovecraft that I will most certainly dip into.
As always, here are some banners should you need them. The lovely and talented Jennifer Gordon agreed again this year to allow me to use her art for the banner. Her images go so hand-in-hand with the feeling I get this time of year that it is hard to resist making her my go-to artist for the R.I.P. Challenge. As she did last year, Jennifer Gordon will be offering some special sales on her Etsy site for R.I.P. participants and she will be making a special print, just for R.I.P. participants, that will be free with any purchase. As soon as details are in, I’ll get them posted.

You are certainly welcome to combine any of your other challenge reading with the R.I.P. V Challenge, if it fits.
In addition to fun reading, there will be thematically appropriate posts, and giveaways, throughout the next two months. To get things started, I will be doing two random drawings of those who sign up for the challenge by Friday, September 3rd at 11:59 p.m. CST.
The first will be your choice of two prints from Jennifer Gordon’s shop (link here)
The second will be a set of Jennifer Gordon bookplates, pictured below:

and some assorted Jennifer Gordon goodies that I just happen to have on hand.
If you do a post regarding signing up for the challenge, please include a link to that post below. You are not required to post to join, so if you are not planning on posting about it, or don’t even have a blog, please sign up anyway in the area below.
As you put up R.I.P. V Reviews on your site, I’d love for you to share those with the rest of us. You can place links to those reviews on the R.I.P. V. Challenge Review Site by clicking here, or by clicking on the Review Site banner in my side bar.
I’m so happy to be hosting this challenge once again and I thank you ahead of time for being a part of R.I.P. V. This is going to be the best one yet.
One last reminder: Please sign up in the Linkies box if you are participating as that is where I will be drawing prize winners from.
Peril on the Screen. I like that addition. Can I include watching the Chiefs play football in that category??? I will start with the small screen and say I’m looking forward to finally getting around to watching ” 9 “. I haven’t heard many good things about it but visually it still looks cool to me and I’m going to snag it from the library so it won’t cost me anything. I also have netflixed Pandorum. I’m a sucker for Dennis Quaid movies. I’m huge The Walking Dead comic fan so I’m looking forward to AMC’s new series based on it which premiers on Oct 31st I believe. I’ve also netflixed Zombieland the wife and I. I caught it last year on the big screen and I’ve been dying to watch it again so why not share it with my better half. Need to re-watch the Hellboy movies as well and maybe even a Vampire flick of some sort.
As for the written word here are the books for my pool:
1. Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett. I read half of it during RIP IV and I need to finish it off this year.
2. Hellboy: The Storm mini-series.
3. The Land of Laughs by Jonathan Carroll.
4. Neverwhere: I would like to reread it if I can track down a copy of the new author’s preferred edition.
5. Angels and Visitations: Another Gaiman book I need to track down hopefully through the library system. Adventures in the Dream Trade is another I need to track down as well I believe.
That’s it for now. Hopefully I’ll get some more ideas of other people’s lists. I’d love it to get just a little cooler to put me in a real full on RIP mood.
Yesss! I love this reading challenge, though with Sanderson’s epic Way of the Kings imminent, it may take a few days before I can fully jump on the gothic trail.
And, since we’re “technically” starting early, I may just have to throw up two reviews that I recently did in the latter half of August, The Warded Man and Hellboy 3 & 4. We’ll see…
Reading list? Hmm.
1. Certainly Lovecraft, Poe, Gaiman, or Doyle
2. More Fables or Hellboy comics/graphic novels.
3. Heart Shaped Box, by Joe Hill (I’ve been saving this for this very challenge)
4. The Passage, by Justin Cronin, if I get it (I’m #6 on the library’s queue as of posting)
5. The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova (having also been on the TBR pile for long time)
Can’t wait to dive in once again. Thanks again for hosting this challenge.
logankstewart: I also am looking forward to Sanderson’s Way of Kings release tomorrow. 🙂
Wheeeeeeeeeeee 😀 Sadly I won’t be able to blog for most of September and October, but who cares? A few weeks of RIP are better than no RIP at all, right? I swear, your challenges are just like Christmas, Carl. I’ll post my list later this week!
Yay, I’ve been waiting for this! I had so much fun participating last year and will be doing so again this year. I’ll be posting my list soon too.
We in the Stevens household have been talking about this for weeks…yes, all five of us are participating (at the four book level nonetheless). Yes, yes, yes…you’ve just made not just my day, of course, but the day of people from all around this planet! 😀
(Be back later to officially sign up.)
I’m in as usual. No official post this time. But I’ve already got a sidebar ready to keep track of my reads and fortunately the book I’m currently reading will qualify!
Thanks to Nymeth I found out this was up! I love this challenge so much – all my favorite genres. I can’t wait for Sept 1 to kick it off 🙂
Woooooot! Been waiting for this to be announced. All ready got a book-pool drafted 😉 I’ll be posting it later this week.
So excited! I’ll have my post up soon!
Already had my list going too! And I’m going to try and beat last year’s 18 reads — I’m aiming for 20! I gathered my books and have 45 here at home to choose from so it should be a breeze. Will link my post tomorrow. So excited!
Kristin: Whoa, 45!?!? That is awesome! Hope you reach your goal of 20.
Andi: I’m excited that you are excited and am super happy that you are joining in this year.
Darren: Look forward to seeing your pool. I’ve been looking forward to it too. Though somewhat artificial at this point, considering the weather, it at least points to fall, my favorite time of year.
Bella: Great! I’m so glad you found out about it and are joining in.
Nicola: Perfect! Glad to have you back.
Debi: I’m thrilled that the whole family is in again this year. Your excitement just fuels my own. 🙂
Sakura: Thank you so much for coming back. I can’t wait to see your list.
Nymeth: I am so out of the loop. You’ll not be blogging for how long?!?! I need to get over there and find out what is up!!!
Jeff: I’m feeling the need to perhaps get in on this Way of Kings things. Peer pressure!!! 😉
Logan: Great to have you in. Right away I see a book I forgot from my list. I read part of Heart-shaped Box last year, and was enjoying it, but then got off track with other things. I need to snag it from the library and finish it. Was just thinking about it last night and then forgot to add it to my list. Lots of great stuff you have on your list.
Jeff: Don’t forget the Royals. There is still plenty of peril left there over the month of Sept. Yikes! Nice looking list you have going there. You can borrow my Angels and Visitations if you want. After all, you bought it for me. It is hardback, so should allay some of your fears. I almost put Neverwhere on my list too. I’ve really been in the mood to check out my author’s preferred edition.
I’ll be interested in your thoughts on 9. It does look cool and I’ve just held off because of bad reviews more than anything. Mary enjoyed Zombieland, so I’m sure Keri will also. On the screen front, we’ll be watching the rest of the third season of Veronica Mars and we’ll for sure be watching some of the Tim Burton stop motion stuff and our old Vincent Price and Hammer Horror movies when it gets closer to mid-October. I’m wanting to track down some of the other British mysteries that I haven’t watched yet as well. Plus I want to see the new Resident Evil movie at the theater, since that has become a guy’s tradition here.
It’s been over a year since I participated in any reading challenges, but just looking over everyone’s book lists, I know for sure I’ll be reading at least one book over the next two months that will qualify me for the challenge. This will be fun!
Yay!!! It’s like Christmas for me! I’m hosting Fright Fest, an entire month of horror/thriller books & movies on my blog, so this will be a super easy challenge for me! Thanks, again, for hosting this, Carl!
Yay!!!! I’m so happy to see this one is up! I’ve linked to my signup post. 😀
Amanda: Great, I’ll be over to check it out.
Jenn: Me too! Friday Fest sounds great! Sounds like a great hookup opportunity. I’ll mention it again in another post as I think it would be real fun to collaborate with you.
Belle: I can’t tell you how much it makes me smile that you are going to come out of your challenge break for this one. Yay!!!
Yay! I posted about this on my blog and my list is there. I just had oodles of fun finding things to go on it (& giving myself permission to buy a few thing). You can read all about it right here.
Thanks, Carl!
Yay! It’s back! With films! I’ll come up with my list soon! So excited! My favorite challenge! Eh, if I enjoy it too much then it’s not really a challenge 🙂
Caitlin: I’ve already splurged with one purchase a few weeks back and will probably find myself doing so again sometime during the challenge.
Lightheaded: Welcome back! Great to have you. And hey, it is all about the fun, not the challenge anyway, right? 😉
I’ve been looking forward to this. I’ll ignore the fact that it was over 90 and humid today and pretend it’s cool and the leaves are beginning to fall. Well, by the time things are well under way it might well be that way! I’ve been thinking a little already about what I might read, but will post something properly in the next day or two as I narrow down my choices. Thanks Carl–this is always so much fun!
Danielle: I’m going to have to work on that ignoring thing as well. The heat index here tomorrow is supposed to be 102. Not exactly leaves turning, smell of autumn in the air temps. I’ll definitely check out your post, I’m always interested in what you choose to read for this challenge.
I am in, of course… Maybe this will be a good time to start updating my blog. The book I am reading now would count… Should have waited a couple days! lol Anyway, I haven’t missed a challenge yet and am not about to start! 🙂 Now to decide if I am posting a pool this year or going entirely by whim…
Yay about the challenge!
The timing is appropriate considering it’s the seventh lunar month (hungry ghost festival) under the chinese lunar calendar.
I’m interested in joining the Short Story Peril and I wonder if it’s OK for me to post a review on each short story I read from a collection (i.e. I’ll only read one book for this challenge)?
I shall have my post up later this week. 🙂
Melody: Your posting plan sounds perfect! And thanks for the hungry ghost festival trivia. I had no idea! Nice to actually learn something new once in awhile.
Carl, I could hardly consider it Autumn without the arrival of your RIP challenge…at least, for the past five years! I’m so looking forward to this; not sure how I’ll partake yet, but rest assured I will. When I finalize my plans, I’ll put up a post. Until then, my friend.
Everytime you’ve posted for the last few weeks I’ve been clicking hoping there’d be an RIP mention at the bottom and now here’s a whole post about it! Yay going to get cracking on with making my list. And the addition of peril on the screen is such a good idea.
I’m so happy this is back, it’ll be my first RIP 🙂 I signed up for two challenges as I’ve been wanting to explore vampires for quite a while now and this gives me the perfect opportunity.
Peril The First
1. Dracula by Bram Stocker
2. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
3. Various short stories about vampires (Polidori’s The Vampyre and some short stories by Bram Stoker)
4. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
AND
Peril on the Screen
1. Interview with the Vampire by Neil Jordan
2. Dracula (1931) by Tod Browning
3. Dracula (1992) by Francis Ford Coppola
4. Nosferatu by Murnau
We’ll see what I can manage. Thank you Carl for hosting this again. The art by Jennifer Gordon is very gorgeous and atmospheric and I very much look forward to the giveaways!
logankstewart – I am awaiting the moment I can get my hands on Sanderson’s The Way of the Kings. He is going to be in my area for a signing early in September – I hope to make it.
Carl – Love, love Jennifer Gordon’s stuff, but I must admit when I see the name Gordon along with a first name that starts with ‘J’, the first thought that crosses my mind is Jeff Gordon…can’t help it. A couple of books on your list is on mine, and a few others that are on your list I hope you read because I want to know what you think of them… Tales of Terror from the Tunnel’s Mouth, and The Vanishing of Katharina Linden (saw this book the other night at B&N and was totally attracted to the cover).
Are you planning on viewing any movies? If so, which ones.
This sounds like so much fun! I’ll be participating for the first time this year.
who woulda believed that I’d go from where I was (not particularly liking stories of this nature) to loving gothic mysteries?! Who’da thunk? Thanks Carl! lol.. I will be back once I do a pic of some books and can officially post that I am joining in once again!!
Carl! Yay! I have been waiting for this for about 3 weeks now. You know how much I love this time of year, and this challenge, so I’m beside myself excited.
And I do hope this is the year of The Historian for you. It is such a great book and I just know you would love it.
Heather: Me too, I got in the mood a bit early this year and these last few weeks waiting have kind of dragged on.
I’ll try! 🙂
Deslily: I look to you as one of the inspirations for doing this, because I remember you talking about how you really didn’t get into this kind of writing and then you found just the right stuff and dived right in. 🙂
Connolly-Ahern: Fantastic!!! Welcome! I hope you have a wonderful time with the event.
Ibeeg: Just fyi, Barnes and Noble is offering members 40% off Sanderson’s book starting today.
I have already started Tunnel’s Mouth and am about a third of the way through. I’m enjoying it. Uncle Montague is by far the best of these three, but this is still creepy fun. I plan on going with the Helen Grant book next.
As for movies, we always watch Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride during the month of October. I also try to fit in a few Vincent Price movies from my collection, usually Fall of the House of Usher for sure, also The Raven or Comedy of Terrors. Halloween season just isn’t the same without Vincent Price and Peter Lorre. I also want to watch El Ofranto, The Orphanage, as it has been a few years. I absolutely love The Others and will probably watch it. I’ll be seeing the latest Resident Evil movie in the theater when it comes out. I’ve seen them all in the theater so it has become a tradition of sorts. We started watching Dark Shadows with Tori recently so I imagine we will fit a few more of those episodes in.
I finished one book yesterday. Does it count?
The Tale of Halcyon Crane by Wendy Webb
Guatami: Definitely, put the link to in on the review site as well.
OK Carl. I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time now, and have signed up for challenges in the past (I used to be known as Asara), but never managed to complete them. I have a new blog, a new outlook, and I really want to do this thing, so here I am to commit for real. 🙂 I’m not sure what I’m going to read yet, but I AM sure I’ve got a few qualifiers on my bookshelves somewhere! /salute!
I just learned about this challenge and I’m in. I love this time of year – and reading for the season!
So glad you’re hosting this again, Carl. (Thank you, thank you, etc!) I’ve been looking forward to it since last year. I’ve just put up a blog post about the challenge and signed up with the linky thing. Now I just need to get reading!
Joy: Me too, and glad you are joining in again. I cheated and started reading a couple of days ago, and this morning I began listening to The Graveyard Book on audio.
ABookGeek: Welcome aboard! Love having first timers. Hope you have a great time.
Carrie: Great to have you back! And you shouldn’t have any trouble completing this one, especially if you choose the 1 book option! That way you join in, have fun, and have success!!! 🙂
I have so much SQUEE for this challenge! Thank you so much for hosting it. I happen to be teaching a course on the Gothic this Fall, so I’m ALL over it!
Looking forward to reading all about what everyone else is doing as well!
Hooray, I’m excited it’s that time of year again!! Thanks for hosting, as ever! 😀
Jenny: You are welcome, thanks for joining in.
Birdie: Speaking of Squee, that is another graphic novel I should consider re-reading during the challenge. Love the fact that you are teaching a course on this, that is so fun.
+JMJ+
My first Reading Challenge! =D I’m so glad there is a movie challenge, too.
I think I’ll have my first post up–one for Peril on the Screen–in a few days! =)
Enbrethiliel: I look forward to reading it, and am honored that you chose RIP V as your first reading challenge. Thanks!
Your mention of Vincent Price brings up a memory. I clearly remember watching a tv show, rather not wanting to watch a tv show that my older brothers always wanted to watch on Friday nights (I believe). It was during the 1970s and would air around the time of Donnie and Marie (which I loved). Maybe it was during the early 80s as well. For whatever reason the name Vincent Price always pops to mind when I think of the show, but I am sure I am incorrect. Then the tv show names of Fright Night, and Creature Features come to mind, but I am so uncertain. Anyhow, I do remember this show would scare me, and I would want no part of it. Do you, by chance, remember a weekly scary tv show that would have a host in the beginning, with a coffin in the background? I just emailed my brother about this, but he lives in Israel so who knows when he will answers a trivia question email.
When I was a teenager, I willed myself to sleep during a sleep over while we were watching The Shining because it scared the bologna out of me. Funny that I now like reading vampire lore and stuff, but I do still stay away from Stephen King, and remain cautious with other suspense/thriller type books. Hopefully none of my choices are too much for me.
By the way, thanks for the tip on the B&N 40% off for Sanderson’s new book. I am so debating with myself if I should purchase or not. I think I should not, but I am so tempted. I am currently reading Elantris so I should satisfy myself with that for right now and just wait.
I am ridiculously excited and can’t wait to participate. Thanks for hosting, Carl! Your challenges are THE best:)
I’ve been looking forward to this all year–it’s my favorite challenge. I’m so glad you felt like starting early, because so did I! My first choice came in from the library 10 days ago, and I’ve already finished reading it, although not writing about it.
Also, I’m SO gonna blow the doors off the “Peril on the Screen” challenge. I love watching classic creepy movies at this time of year!
Kaizerin: The Peril on the Screen addition seems to be getting some positive buzz. Not sure why I didn’t add it before as seasonally appropriate films are always something I engage in during late Sept. and throughout October. I’m happy you’ll be taking on that Peril as well.
thanks for joining in. Usually I try to get the announcement up even earlier, but I was very pressed for time this year. I’m happy to have gotten it out before Sept. 1 actually rolled around! LOL!
Jessica: I am too, both as host and participant. And thank you, I (blushingly) appreciate it.
Ibeeg: There was the weekly television show that featured short horror tales called Night Gallery which was hosted by Rod Serling. It was the horror version of The Twilight Zone. My brother and I watched it a bunch growing up. We were the right age for it as it scared the crap out of us. I really should go back and watch them again. I’m sure they’d be horribly cheesy, and because of that somewhat creepy, again. Not sure if that is the one you are thinking of.
Not sure if I’ll be doing this “officially”, but I’ll certainly be reading some books that fall into the (very broad) definition. As you know or can guess, it will be mysteries for me. Perhaps I can count the one I posted this morning? Yes, I think I will.
I just started Reynold’s Revelation Space, on page 20 and it’s a 550+ pager, so it may be a while before I get back to a mystery, but we’ll see. I’ll do the set-up, sign-up and all later, but I guess I’m in.
Great Richard. I certainly think with all the mystery reading that you do that you end up reading a lot of books that qualify. I look forward to your thoughts on Revelation Space. Is that your first Reynolds?
Yep, it is. I read some reviews of other books, but as I understand it this is the first so I decided to start with it.
I’m all signed up (and excited)!! 🙂
Yay! I’m always happy to participate in the RIP Challenges.
I’m in for Peril the 1st & Peril on the screen. Happy to be participating again after unfortunately missing last year! Will make up my list this week and get it posted.
glad you liked the steampunk Star Wars portraits. For some reason the instant i saw them you popped into mind! Would be great if he’d do prints of them for sale.
I just signed up, and put up a post about this today! This is my second year participating, and looking forward to it!
This comes at the right time. I will have to think about how many books I can manage.
I will definitely read “I’d know you anywhere” by Laura Lippman. I usually don’t read thrillers at all, so this challenge WILL be a real challenge for me.
Rikki: Since this is outside of your usual realm of reading I sincerely hope you find some books that rock your socks off! 🙂
Valerie: Great, welcome back! I’ll check out your post.
SGist: The steampunk Star Wars images were so much fun. I’m so glad you sent the link. Thanks for coming back after a year off.
Chrisbookarama: And I’m happy to have you back year after year. I really do appreciate it.
Stephanie: Thank you!!!
im in for peril the first and the short story peril 🙂 really excited
I’ve signed up for Peril the First and looking forward to participating.
Carl – Twilight Zone was another show that was watched frequently in my home, and that still was a little to creepy for me at the time.
My brother did email me back, it was Creature Features that scared me while I was growing up. If your curious about the theme music that would start the evening off right, my brother sent me a youtube link. Experiment in Terror. That music is still creepy. Late at night, driving home from work that music most certainly could make me a bit paranoid about what goes bump in the night, especially when I have to leave my car to enter my home.
🙂 Yes! It is time for R.I.P. once again! I’m going for Peril the First.
Jenclair: Yay! Thanks for joining in again this year. I look forward to reading your reviews.
Ibeeg: I still find some episodes of The Twilight Zone to be creepy. I’m not sure I ever watched Creature Features. I do remember seeing the old classic horror films on weekend television though.
Cat, Kai: I’m excited both of you have signed up. Thank you!
Of course I will be participating! But probably in a less-voluminous way than usual; too much going on this fall. But I’ve got some good things picked out that I’ve been saving. Yay!!
Yeah! Peril the Second starting with Dracula. Thanks again for doing this, Carl.
It is ridiculously hot here in my home state (unseasonably, unreasonably so) but in spite of that, and in spite of my record of sketchy reading and blogging over this summer, I am very excited to embrace my love of autumn and Halloween and celebrate it this year by joining your challenge. I’ve been meaning to read Poe extensively at some point, and I’ve been dealing with an increasingly obsessive desire to re-read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories, both of which are perfect for this!
Thanks again for hosting this fun challenge, Carl!
Here’s my post.
After 24 hours, you can find my post (and my choices) here. 🙂
Love it every year! Thanks, Carl!
Of course I’m in! 🙂
Love this time of year…..
I am so in! I love, love, love these genres, horror especially. Hoping to find some new goodies via other ppl’s reviews. I am so excited. Thank you for hosting this.
I’m so freaking excited Carl that I can’t even tell you!!! I swear I feel like I’ve been waiting for this all year 😀 I swear you’ve just filled me with a bit of renewed spirit that I really needed with this announcement 😀 And crap….I forgot about the Priestly books…I loved the first one so much that I really want to get the next two that he’s done. As if I don’t have enough on my list :p
Chris: Me too! As much as I truly enjoy the spring reading challenge, in my heart I would love to go from the sci fi experience straight on into RIP and the long holiday season! Can’t wait to see your list. I’m about mid way through the Priestley book and it is fun. I’m enjoying each story better than the one before it and it is building up some nice suspense.
SenoraG: You are welcome, thank you for joining in. I will cross my fingers that you discover some great books during the challenge.
Michele: Then you are certainly among friends. 🙂
Iliana: Terrific!!!
Dana: It truly is my pleasure.
Bellezza: I was hoping you’d put up a list. I’ll be over soon to check it out.
Melody: Thanks, I’ll check it out.
Sarah: It was ridiculously hot here today too, but the wind has just picked up and is blowing tremendously and thunder and lightning, and now rain, have rolled in. The wind brought temps waaay down and it actually has truly turned into the kind of ‘dark and stormy night’ that is an inspiration for this challenge.
Gavin: I’m so excited for you. Dracula is just so incredible.
Daphne: Yes, you guys do have a lot going on, that is for sure. Makes me very happy that you are taking the time to join in.
Horray! I look forward to this challenge each and every year, and I can’t wait to dive in in 2010–even though I recently moved to the southern hemisphere, and so no longer have the benefit of autumnal weather in which to conduct my scary reading. 🙂
I’ve been waiting for you to announce this! I’m all signed up and ready to go. 😀
This looks like an excellent prompt to read the book of four gothic novels that I’ve had sat around on my shelves for ages. I can’t wait to get started.
Can I tell you how completely excited I am to join this challenge again? I have thought about it since the end of last year’s challenge.
I have bought a few books throughout the year with the intention of reading them during this challenge. I will be organizing them, taking a photo, writing a post, and begin reading ASAP 🙂
Molly: Looking forward to seeing the photo of the books you’ve collected.
Old English Rose: Wonderful! I hope the book proves to be worth the wait.
Michelle: Welcome, and thank you.
Memory: It will be autumn for you in spirit, even if it is not a reality seasonally. So great to have you again this year.
I was just thinking it was about the time of year for this challenge and then it pops up! Happy times ahead!
I am so happy it’s time for this challenge again! Keeping my fingers crossed it boots me out of my reading slump; if anything can, it’s RIP! And I’m loving the Peril on the Screen option. Will definitely be taking part in that over the coming months. (Which, time to fess up, I sorta cheated and posted my review for Dorian Gray – but it was only up two days before the announcement, so might I be forgiven? Thanks for hosting this awesome challenge once again, Carl!!
Chelle: You most definitely are forgiven, and highly encouraged to include it has part of this year’s challenge experience. A little cheating is always smiled upon! 🙂
I was in a bit of a reading slump too, but this has excited me so much that I got right back into it. I hope the same happens for you.
Cafeshree: Woo-hoo! Thanks for signing up. Hard to believe it is this time of year already, but I am super glad that it is.
I’m so excited to start this challenge! I enjoyed last year’s R.I.P. IV so much. These are some of my favorite genres and I am now a huge fan of Jennifer Gordon’s work. I have been collecting books all year waiting for R.I.P V to begin.
Amy
We had both Fright Night and “Creature Feature” here in California. The former had Elvira, Queen (or was it Mistress”?) of the Dark as a hostess, if I recall correctly. It was on late at night here, 11:00 pm on Friday, and it was on in the early-mid 1980s. I remember going to parties and at 11:00 the music went off and everyone crowded around the TV, making sarcastic comments a la SF Theater 3000 which came long afterward. Of course by that time no one was particularly sober, but that was part of the fun.
Books lined up (so far) for the challenge:
The Black Bat volume 1 by Norman A. Daniels
Hell-Bent for Danger by Walt Grove
Seventy-Seven Clocks by Christopher Fowler
The Spider # 2
In the Shadow of the Falcon’s Wings by Sean Ellis
Subject to change at a whim or moment’s notice, of course!
I can’t believe it’s time for this already!! But, I am glad it is – despite out 90 degree days, the nights are starting to get chilly and call out for scary books 🙂
So far my list, for Peril the First, is:
Haunting of Hill House – Shirley Jackson
The Tooth Fairy or Dark Sister – Graham Joyce
Come Close – Sara Gran
Dreadful Skin – Cherie Priest
Voice of Our Shadow – Jonathan Carroll
Hell House – Richard Matheson
Subject to my changing whims 😉
I’m excited to begin the challenge – and thanks also for reminding me that The Fall will be out soon! Can’t wait to read that!
Alal Bradley’s books have such a summery feeling i forget that they are mysteries! Definitely try to get to Hangman’s Bag. I also have The Fall on my list, if i can get it from the library on time. I also have the first House of Mystery graphic novel that i am going to get to for this challenge. YAY!
Excited to be doing this again (I think my third year). I actually never finish any of the challenges b/c I am too busy and too ambitious, but *this is the year.*
I’m FINALLY participating this year. Posted my reading lists to my web site and can’t wait to get started!
glad i found this challenge…and i do love the use of the word imbibing–clever.
now to browse for reading ideas and get started!
I’m so in! This will be my third year playing along. I’ll be aiming for Peril the Second. Thank you so much for hosting.
I always look forward to the RIP challenge each year. Can’t wait to get working on my books for this year. They’re listed here: http://www.blogginboutbooks.com/2010/09/frightful-delightful-challenges.html
I’m excited to sign up, although I already read a lot of horror! It’ll be fun to connect with you all and also to nudge my own readers toward broadening their horizons into horror a bit more. 🙂
(My Mr. Linky link will be live when the post goes up tomorrow, September 2nd).
You should be able to hear me squeeing with joy all the way from over here by the Pacific. I’ve been looking forward to this ever since November 1st last year!
Thanks so much for hosting again Carl! I just posted my reading pool over at mine. I’ve been looking forward to this, and actually stockpiling books 🙂
Kate: You are very welcome. I hope you get through a lot of your stockpile.
Terri B.: I can! 🙂 I’ve been looking forward to it as well.
Amanda: Great, thanks for joining in. Even if it isn’t a “challenge” for you to read this kind of literature, it isn’t for many of us, it is still wonderful to have you participating.
Susan: I couldn’t wait, I had to start early! Ha!
Jessica: Welcome back for year three, that’s awesome!!!
L: It took awhile to figure out what to use for the “I” when I started this 5 years ago. Thanks. 😉
Kerri: I’m so glad you were able to join in with us this year.
Charitie: I’m way too ambitious as well, as reader and host, but that is part of the fun, in my opinion, the dreaming about what might be accomplished in the given time period.
Melanie: I agree. I’m surprised I didn’t get to this second book right when it came out, but now am glad I have it to read for the challenge.
Olduvai: You are welcome. I had forgotten about it until I saw an ad for it somewhere.
Jenn: Great list of fantastic authors.
Richard: Whims are completed expected! I’m intrigued by your list, as usual. Not authors I’ve heard of but authors I’m sure I’ll be interested in once you start putting up reviews. Ah…Elvira. I love Elvira. One of my annual traditions during the Halloween season is to watch her campy film, Elvira’s Haunted Hills. Good melodrama and tongue in cheek innocent sexual innuendo.
Amy: I’m excited to hear it. I hope you are able to get to a bunch of the books you’ve been saving up. And isn’t Jennifer Gordon wonderful? And she is as cool as her work, which makes liking it that much more special.
I’m so excited! This is my very first challenge, and this one seems like it’ll be very fun. Here’s my list. I don’t know if I’ll get through all of them but I’m shooting for 4 of these 🙂
1. Cover Her Face by PD James
2. Bitten by Kelly Armstrong
3. Death in Holy Orders by PD James
4. Changeless by Gail Carriger
5. The Darkness That Comes Before by R Scott Bakker
6. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice
7. Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake
Thanks, Carl. We’ve been talking about this challenge for weeks! Everyone is excited in this house. I’m looking forward to Peril on the Screen, too. Definitely watching Halloween and Night of the Living Dead. Scotland, PA perhaps? Maybe another good zombie movie or two…first, it’s time to read!
Looking forward to it! I have a tentative list, but other than re-reading Frankenstein (a yearly event,) I’m not sure what else I’ll end up reading. Good times!
Thanks for hosting this challenge again Carl! I’m excited to read a ton of scary books!
I can’t wait! This was my very first and by far favorite reading challenge last year!!
Just read The Strain but haven’t posted yet, so I’m cheating a bit and throwing that one in. Will also do The Fall! Love this challenge and this time of year!
Oh my this is my first year participating and I’ve got shivers of excitement!!! As soon as I leave this comment I’m running and jumping on the bed to begin my first of four in Peril the first!!! And oh please please pick me for the art work by Jennifer Gordon!!! I just moved into a townhouse and the walls are barren!! Her work is so gorgeous!
Loving this challenge!!!
Escapist – nice to see some P. D. James on a list! Looking forward to your reviews>
I am excited for this challenge and can’t wait to dive into some spooky reads! I’m thinking I’ll go with Peril the Second, but am aiming to read more than 2 books. Not sure which ones yet, but I’m thinking Jekyll and Hyde will be one of those reads. Hmmm.
Oh, hooray – I’m so excited! My favorite challenge is back. 🙂 Now it’s just a little bit easier to let go of a summer that just flew by. I’ll get my post up soon – I’ve been saving up books for this time of year! Thanks so much for hosting this again, Carl. You have made my day.
This is my first year participating and I’m really excited. As a child, and still as an adult, I tend to gravitate towards gothic novels and ghost stories. I’m not as much of a fan of scary movies, but give me a good book and my imagination will go wild.
Thanks for hosting this challenge!
Oh, I am so in! Soccer and spooky reading go hand in hand this time of year. Thanks for hosting again. Carl. I’ve really come to love this challenge.
FuzzyCricket: Perfect! Although for me it is the other kind of football that goes hand in hand with this time of year. 🙂
Stephanie N: Welcome to the challenge, it is great to have you. I hope you find some engaging reads to partake of during the next two months.
Darla: Looking forward to your post to see what books you’ve been gathering. Thanks for joining again this year.
Nadia: Thanks for joining in. As I read your comment I had a flashback of memory–I can clearly recall the time I read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when I was a young teen. Thanks for stirring up a good memory.
Stacy: Hopefully the Hand of Fate will land on you when the drawing rolls around. Her work does look great on the wall, as I can personally attest to. Welcome, by the way, I’m thrilled you are so excited.
Carey: Cheat away! Make sure you post your Strain review on the Review Site as I want to see what you thought about it.
Michelle: Aw, thanks! And thanks for coming back again this year.
Annie: As you know, it is always a great pleasure to have you on board for the challenges I host. 🙂
Stacey: Great to have you in the challenge. Enjoy Frankenstein and whatever else you choose to read.
Rich: I haven’t heard of Scotland, PA…but I’ll be looking it up now. It makes me so happy that your family is participating and so excited about it.
Escapist: Thanks for joining. Fun and diverse list! 🙂
I have only just discovered this challenge! I am really looking forward to taking part! Thanks for hosting it!
Hugs, Bethxx
Well, Beth, it is wonderful to have you on board. I’m glad you discovered it. Thanks for signing up.
I loved doing this last year…one of my favorite challenges!!
I’m so excited to be back for another RIP! Hooray!
This will be my first year participating in this challenge. I missed it last year and felt sad that everyone was having such a spooky good time but me. This year, I planned ahead so I’m good to go! Thanks for hosting … it is a deliciously fun challenge.
Woo hoo!! I’m going to really commit this year–all the way to Peril the First; even have some idea of the books I’ll be reading, which is completely out of character. Thank you for once again offering this challenge. Mysteries are just the ticket now. Will have a post up by week’s end. Oh, such fun 🙂
ds: Glad to hear it…er, read it. 😉 I’ve been in a mystery frame of mind myself.
Jenners: Awesome to have you for the first time this year. I’m glad you didn’t miss it this time and appreciate you joining in.
Liana: It is exciting to have you back, thanks.
Tina: Awww…thanks! 🙂
Beth: And hugs back to you, thanks for joining in.
Yes! I’m really excited about this! I found out about it from A Bookish Way of Life. I just finished up a challenge on Tuesday and I’m ready for the next. Plus, Halloweeen is my favorite holiday 🙂 I’ll post about the challenge this week.
I’m excited about this! I’m not normally a scary-book reader, so this will be a wandering into uncharted territory for me.
Thanks so much for hosting this; <a href="http://www.buriedinprint.com/?page_id=2043"here is my big, scary plan. I’m not entirely sure if the DuMaurier works will feel spooky enough (especially those particular novels), so I might have to revise my plan as I go, but I’m looking forward to it greatly!
Yeah! I came home from vacation looking for the challenge post. Finally its live and hopefully my post will bring in a few newer participants. Thanks Carl.
Woohoo! I have no idea what I’m going to read yet, and I’m still working on setting up a blog for my posts, but I’ve had a blast with this challenge the last couple years. I think the Peril on the Screen is a great idea *ponders The Shining, Sleepy Hollow, The Crow, The Ring…*
Here’s my post about kickstarting both the challenge and my new blog!
http://crowdedbookshelves.blogspot.com/2010/09/readers-imbibing-peril.html
Woo hoo! Sounds very cool and I have a bunch that I think will fit including my first HP Lovecraft book.
WonderBunny: Its cool to have you, go Lovecraft!!!
Jen: The new blog looks great, thanks for joining in this year.
Shellie: Well I hope the announcement tempers the let down of having to come back from vacation, LOL! thanks for taking part again this year.
Buried: oh, du Maurier is DEFINITELY perfect for RIP. She is quintessentially gothic in my opinion. Rebecca could be one of the poster children for what I envisioned when I started this.
Rai: Wonderful! I love it when these challenges get folks to try something they don’t normally read. Welcome, it is great that you are joining in with us.
Brenna: Perfect! Great to have you.
This is going to be so much fun. Really looking forward to it.
Erik: It will be, and I’m glad you are joining in to help make it even more so. Thanks.
First RIP Challenge for me! I don’t know which book to start with, Im so excited! Anyay Im up for Peril the First!
This sounds fun! I think I could manage Peril the Second (maybe even the First) and I’m hoping to squeeze in some short stories as well.
Oops! The linkback feature pulled my whole summary paragraph from my Her Fearful Symmetry review–including spoilers. Carl, can you edit that down to something less revealing?
Yes! I just posted about the challenge. Can’t wait to start!
can’t wait!
always so much fun! compiling my list!
What a terrific challenge! I’ll be back.
my very first actual text post! on live journal is up listing a few of the movies i’m intending to watch for Peril on the Screen… (that was waaayyyy easier than i expected) the posting that is, not the movies…those are alway easy!
My short story Peril will be “The Poison Eaters” by Holly Black and i’ll get the Peril the First wading pool list up this weekend.
Happy Labor Day weekend to everyone!!! enjoy the last real holiday of the summer, safely please…
Kinda hard to say no to you Carl! I’m back for more.
my very first challenege, have to say i’m excited.
i realized after i first found this that i don’t have very many books that could work for this, which for me is kind of weird. so my list is looking like:
1)the complete works of edgar allen poe (a.k.a. the big-ass book of poe)
2) world on blood (about vampires who try to quit blood a.a. style)
3) the blue bloods series (i think my sister has four or five of the books now)
looks like i need to see which of my books my little sister still has.
I like this challenge. I’ll be reading some Edgar Allen Poe short stories, Jane Eyre, and any other short stories I can find that fit this challenge.
I’ve seen this challenge around before, but this is my first year joining!
As always, I’m so excited for this challenge!
I have been taking a hiatus from challenges this year – this is the first one I have joined since January when I cut my challenges back from over 30 to a more manageable 8 🙂
I’m excited to be able to participate this year!! I’ve been reading about the RIP challenge in other book bloggers postings! I’m already enjoying reading others’ lists and posts as much as actually participating myself 🙂 SOOOO many more books to add to my TBR pile!
I’m thrilled to be participating in this cool challenge that I have heard so many great things about since I joined. I was a member for only 2 months at this time last year and confused/bewildered/overwhelmed by this terric book blogging community so I missed joining in this challenge. Thank goodness I settled in! Now to decide which scary books make the cut for my reading horror pleasure!
I’m really hoping the hot weather will be scared outta here while I’m reading suspenseful, thriller-ish, horror-filled books!
Thanks, Carl, I know this challenge is going to be a lot of fun!
~ Amy
Great idea! I’m joining in too1
This is my first ever challenge I’ve joined and I’m really excited. Already have four books on my TBR shelf that fit into your broad description so might as well go straight for Peril the First 🙂
Love this challenge!! I’ll definitely join 🙂
I’ll write my introduction today ad sign up as soon possible.
I have 10 thriller Manga, 4 horror books, some movies to watch 🙂 Thriller and ghost story are my favorite genre
Novroz: Terrific! It will be great to have you with us. Sounds like you’ll have some great choices to dip into for the challenge.
Jessicabookworm: Welcome to your first challenge. I am so honored to be host of your first one and I hope you have a wonderful time with it.
Judith: Thank you for taking part, it is great to have you.
Amy: I’m glad you were able to get in on it this year. I do believe we will have a great time.
Patti Smith: Welcome! Isn’t it great to check out other peoples’ lists? I get so many ideas that way…and of course the tbr pile just grows and grows.
Sally: I am so glad you made and exception for RIP V! 🙂
Trisha: Me too, have a great time.
KyleeJ: Welcome aboard, I’m happy you are joining in this year.
Ashley: Poe is always a great choice! Yay!!!
Jessica: I love being the host of RIP, for the newcomers and those who return. It is an honor to have you join in this year.
Sandy: Well I’m glad this is one you don’t want to pass up.
sgist: Gotta check out that movie list. I keep finding things I want to watch for Peril on the Screen. I’ll never get to them all, but it will be fun trying.
Stephanie: Great!!!
Rachel: I know, isn’t it a blast making the list of potential reads?
Brenna: Thanks for joining in. 🙂
Karenlibrarian: I hope you enjoy your reading for the challenge.
Tintin: Yay!!! Thanks for taking part, have a wonderful time with it.
Finally made my list – lol! 😀
I totally enjoy the idea of this challenge. Being a native German/French speaker I chose only German books, short story and movie. Hope you will enjoy and discover/rediscover new things as I am looking forward to make many discoveries.
My choices are one of Gustav Meyrink’s hauntingnovels, a short story by E.T.A Hoffmann and Murnau’s classic movie Nosferatu. Details in my post.
http://beautyisasleepingcat.wordpress.com/2010/09/05/taking-the-r-i-p-v-challenge/
I love this challenge!! I posted two scary books to help get me into the Halloween spirit =)
Kristina: Great! It is a good spirit to be getting into, even this early in the season. Before we know it the 31st of Oct. will be here and gone.
Caroline: Thanks for joining in. I thought your book choices were interesting as I certainly have not heard of the author. I will definitely be looking forward to your reviews.
Maree: Thanks for joining in. You might want to re-sign up in Mr. Linky because for some reason it doesn’t take people to your blog.
Wonderful! I’ve never seen the RIP challenge before, but I’ve gone and dug out a book from my bookcase and I’m ready to go! Thank you so much for sponsoring this.
Carl,
I am terribly sorry for the mess I just made. Hope you are going to erase my two wrong linkies.
Looks really silly.
I am glad I contributed books that are not too known. Meyrink is quite a mysterious author. if you have ever been to Prague you would adore The Golem. if not you’d want to go there.
So glad it’s time for this challenge again – I’ve been saving books up for it, but now I can get started!
This will almost be cheating for me, because I read so mysteries anyway. But I’ve been reading other things (for once) lately, so it will be nice to fall back into old habits, and to see what other people are reading. Thanks for organizing this.
Can’t resist any longer. The lists everyone has posted plus the beautiful artwork you feature here… Too much fun to pass on!
Hooray! my favorite challenge EVER! http://figandthistle.wordpress.com/2010/09/05/library-loot-the-r-i-p-edition/
I’ve got my reading pool list up on my journal! I hope it can be accessed. I’m a raw newbie at this thoughts on line thing.
I’m a little late to the party, but I have been looking forward to this all year! I plan on re-reading The Thirteenth Tale and finally getting around to Her Fearful Symmetry. I have been saving it especially for this challenge.
Thanks for giving me an “excuse” to finally read Coraline and the Red House Mystery, among others.
I’m new to the reading challenge thing as well as the book review thing. I saw this challenge on a friend’s blog though and just had to join the fun!
I don’t have much planned yet. The only thing set in concrete is House of Leaves. I do think I’ll take this time to re-read all of my favorite Poe stories, though. It just doesn’t feel right reading them at any other time of the year.
My list is finalized:
My list:
1. Tales of Terror from the Tunnel’s Mouth by Chris Priestley
2. Tales of Terror from the Black Ship by Chris Priestley
3. Heir of Mystery by Philip Ardagh
4. The Dead Travel Fast by Deanna Raybourn
I’m still pretty new to this whole blogging thing, so I was totally baffled when I saw RIP V on Andi’s blog. By the time I read the fourth reference to it I had not only figured out what people were talking about but had informed myself that I absolutely was NOT going to click on that link as I had enough reading projects already.
Clearly I listened.
While I have not decided what I’m going to read yet, (or which peril – I’m torn between Peril the Third and Short Story Peril), I have to say I am ridiculously excited about this. Thanks a billion for hosting!
In other news, I love that you take the time to respond to everyone’s comments. You pretty much rock 🙂
Yaaaay! It’s here! I just posted about the challenge, and have 17, no, um 19 books to try to read in 8 weeks!! Irresistible challenge, and I’m so happy you are doing this again, Carl. I’ve read so many good books, in the past years, because of this challenge. You have some interesting books on your list too, Carl!
I’m in! Still no blog, though.
This is not generally my kind of book, but I’ll see how I do.
Carl-
I’d love to work on something together with you..shoot me and email and we can discuss!
Carl,I have a question?
Do we need to link the review we had written in your blog? most challenge I’m in are like that.
I’m so looking forward to starting this. Thank you so much for hosting!
Sounds interesting. I have recently decided to reread Dracula and I want to give the Dresden Files another try. I’ll poke around to see what else pops up (looking at other people’s posts should help).
Excellent list Carl – can’t wait for your reviews.
I am going to have to spend several hours here looking at all the posts for all the other folks entered in the challenge.
So much fun, I can hardly stand it.
I’m not only joining the challenge (with probably one book, but maybe film, too!) I’m doing something a little different.
I’m going to post about the challenge at my page over at the WeatherUnderground blogs. Believe it or not, there are a lot of readers over there who have no contact with the book blogging community and there’s never any mention of the challenges there.
RIP V for everyone, that’s what I say! I’m really looking forward to participating. My firt challenge is picking a book to read!
I have no idea what I did there, but hopefully this link works. 🙂
I’ve been wanting to play along for several years now but I never get the time to. I think I will be able to this year!
I just read about this event on another blog so I’m definitely a little late to the party, but I’m looking forward to participating!!! Thank you for hosting what sounds like an event with lots of fun!!
Michele
I have done this once before, a couple of years ago, but didn’t finish. I intend to read 2 books this year. . .list will soon be posted on my site. Thanks for hosting!
I’m so excited to do this again this year! Autumn is my favourite time of year, and I can’t think of a better way to usher it in. I’m going for four books this year, so bring it on!
Morgan: Great! Bring it on indeed! I’m glad you are bringing your excitement with you, makes it all the more fun.
Annette: Welcome back, thanks for joining in.
Michele Rice: ah, it is never too late until it is all over. Glad you found out about it and decided to join in.
Ladytink: I’m glad you finally gave in. 🙂
Maree: No worries.
Shoreacres: Thanks Linda, that is a great idea. I’m so happy you are joining in and appreciate you spreading the word elsewhere.
Shellie: Several hours is right, you can spend days just looking at other peoples’ lists and trying to figure out just how you are going to cram so much reading into only two months. LOL!
Bookwryme: I do so love Dracula.
Whitney: you are welcome, thanks for joining in.
Novroz: Link any reviews you write for challenge reading over on the RIP V Book Review Site. Click on the banner for the review site in my sidebar to get there (just under the RIP V banner)
Jenn: Will do!
Ikkinala: No blog is necessary, love it that you are going to give this a try.
Susan: Your list sounds like mine, just keeps growing to impossible numbers!
Emily: I’m glad you decided to go ahead and take on one more challenge. Doesn’t sound like you are too new to blogging to me. If you are overwhelmed with too much to read and not enough time then you are an old soul like the rest of us! Welcome!
Sally: Love seeing Priestley on your list. Those books are great. I’m pretty sure my wife read the Ardagh series and enjoyed them.
Cassandra: Great to have you! House of Leaves is a book I own but always seems daunting to me. I need to get brave and read it. And I feel the same way about Poe. This time of year is the perfect time to revisit his works.
Mish: Hey, I’m giving myself excuses too, so you’re welcome!
Jehara: As I said earlier, it is never too late to join in. Thirteenth Tale was wonderful, wasn’t it? I look forward to your thoughts on Her Fearful Symmtery. I blogged a couple of posts about it when I read it last year.
sgist: I believe you got it right.
Amanda R.: Thanks! and thank you for joining in.
Frances: Resistance is futile! (I know, wrong genre). Anyway, so happy that you gave in. 🙂
Audrey: This just gives you and excuse to read what you enjoy! 🙂
GeraniumCat: isn’t it wonderful that Sept. is finally here?!?!
Caroline: Oh, no worries. It is just an easy way for people to link things, I make mistakes on them all the time.
Ann B: Welcome, I’m glad you found out about it and am happy you have stuff on your shelves that fit the challenge. (Always nice to be able to save a little money). Thanks for joining in with us. I hope your first time is wonderful.
Thanks for hosting this challenge! I just spread the word on my Suburban Vampire blog, and I’ll soon promote it over at my writing site, CatWinters.com. Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s YA ghost story, The Prince of Mist, is waiting for me in my reading pile, so I plan to pick it up tonight and start my own foray into the challenge.
Catherine: You are welcome. Thank you for spreading the word. I’ll come check out the sites. I was looking at Shadow of the Wind on my bookshelf just last night thinking that I should finally pull it down and start finding out why everyone likes him so much. It sounds like such a great read.
The Shadow of the Wind is a good one. Definitely check it out.
I will, thanks.
I finally got around to posting my sign-up post!
http://www.jennsbookshelves.com/2010/09/10/r-i-p-v-challenge/
This sounds like a great challenge.. Maybe I’ll finally read some books that have been waiting for years to be read.
My favorite challenge of the year! All signed up now and have my books to read. 🙂
I am excited to have found your blog and this challenge. I will visit everyone and get to add other bloggers that love the dark side.
Better late than never… Very excited. I’ll be participating in three of the challenges: Peril the First, Short Story Peril and Peril on Screen.
Looking forward to it!
One of my favorite challenges every year! Thanks Carl!

Stiletto Storytime
Looking forward to a great challenge!

I have two blogs — my personal horror books blog and a library sponsored blog and I’m taking the R.I.P. V challenge twice. 4 horror books, horror short stories and movie at “Horror Books with the Undead Rat” and 4 thriller books, thriller short stories and 1 thriller movie for the work related “Lair of the Undead Rat” blog.
I have no idea . . . well maybe I have a few ideas . . .about what I’m going to read for these challenges. Luckily I still have a month and a half to do it.
I really enjoyed participating in this last year. Sorry I am late to join the party. I have read some stories that I will be posting on this week.
Oh man, this is just my sort of challenge! Can’t wait to get startee! 🙂
Only just discovered this great looking challenge so hope you don’t mind a late entry. Between now and 31st October I hope to read the following (most of them YA/kids books as that is the focus of my blog):
The Dead by Charlie Higson
The Dark by David Gatward
Furnace: Lockdown by Alexander Gordon Smith
Furnace: Solitary by Alexander Gordon Smith
The Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Better late than never!
I’m signing up for Peril the First and Short Story Peril, although I need to dig through my books a bit before putting up a list. Lovecraft is definitely in there somewhere though.
Thanks for posting this info. We have been searching about this on msn and I am glad to find your website. I will return in the future for more info.
Suddenly, it came over me – an irresistable compulsion to participate! And, I posted about the challenges on both The Task at Hand and at my Weather Underground page – not the most “literary site” for sure, but certainly a good place to introduce folks to the wonderful things happening here.
I’ll be reading M is for Magic and The Woman in White – and looking forward to both!
I’m very late signing up this year, therefore I’m only doing Peril the Third and Peril on the Screen. Looking forward to it!
I’ve finally officially signed up, even though I’ve been reading since September 1st, hehe. I messed up my permalink in the Mr. Linky though. 🙁 I went ahead and added the correct link, so if you can just delete #220 for me Carl, that’d be great!
Yay! I’ve finally signed up for this challenge — every year I say I’m going to do it, and every year, I fail. I love this time of year!!
This will be my first time, but I’m hoping to read two books (at least)!
I finally got my review of Dracula up! http://bookwyrmeslair.blogspot.com/2010/09/dracula-by-bram-stoker-book-review.html
Read The Haunted House, edited by Charles Dickens: http://bookwyrmeslair.blogspot.com/2010/09/haunted-house-edited-by-charles-dickens.html
I’m late to the party, but I’ll plan on striving for RIP I! What fun!
I found this challenge by accident but I’m so glad I did!! The idea is amazing and I can’t wait to start reading :D. I joined pretty late so I decided to participate in Peril the second and also Peril on the screen :). I love mysteries and gothic atmosphere in books/films and now is the perfect time to immerse in them!
I finished the challenge! I read four novels and two short stories, and just had a great time reading about things that go bump in the night. Thanks for hosting this great challenge!
Joining VERY late, but I think I can squeeze a book or two in this week! I am doing Peril the Second with a very slight chance of adding in some Short Story Peril. Love this challenge, so I couldn’t miss it this year even though I am so late!!
This looks like so much fun! Thanks for hosting. 😀 I’m doing a Radcliffe through Peril the Third, but I might read beyond it. I just hate commiting unless I’m certain I’ll follow through. 🙂
