Welcome fair June! Looking back I did a lot of things in the month of May: read a handful of books, took a day trip to one of my favorite Missouri towns and walked the Katy Trail, started trail running again, celebrated my 32nd wedding anniversary, and went up to Nebraska for the first time since early 2019 and visited my sister and her family. It was an immensely enjoyable and satisfying month, and I expect that to continue for June.
In addition to my recently announced plan to do my own Summer Reading Program again this year, #VentureForth2021, which begins today and ends September 22nd, I am participating for a second year in a row in Cath’s 20 Books of Summer event.
Last year I posted a pile of potential reads and while I started to do that again this year, I decided to forgo my usual picture or list habit and just read where the whims take me. I started a young adult audio book this morning, have a couple of graphic novels on hold at the local library that I will pick up today, and have several volumes of fiction and nonfiction on my shelves that are all clamoring for my attention. There will no doubt be new reads and re-reads, children’s picture books, poetry collections and more. It promises to be a fun Summer of reading mixed in with a lot of outdoor activities and other adventures.
I also decided last night that I will be participating in Faith Simmons’ #stayintunethisjune challenge, which is a challenge to journal one page each day and she will be offering a daily prompt to guide the journaling process. I journal semi-regularly already (average 4 out of 7 days a week) but I want it to be a daily habit, so I look forward to participating in this to build it into my morning routine. More information can be found about this on Faith’s Instagram account: @thesunalsoreads
Again I say, “Welcome June”! I hope everyone has a lovely and memorable month ahead.
Sounds like a wonderful May filled with time with family and doing things you love. I feel as if we’re all waking up from a terrible nightmare of 2020. Hope you have a great time with your reading and journaling projects this month!
It is very odd this Summer compared to last. In a good way, thankfully.
I love coming up with the list for 20 Books of Summer almost as much as reading the books.
Foundation by Asimov is one of the books that was in my Venture Forth plans last year that did not get read, and I am planning to get to it this summer.
Also on my list is All Systems Red by Martha Wells, which I first read about here at your blog.
I generally enjoy the lists too, but my reading whims have been all over the place of late and I knew as soon as I made a list I would end up not reading anything on it, and there are some books that I truly want to get to and don’t want to distract myself. That makes no sense, but it is exactly what would happen, lol!
I reread the first two Foundation novels recently and really enjoyed going back into those stories.
I’ve read the first four Murderbot novellas, but still haven’t gotten to the novels. Someday.
I am also taking part in Cathy’s 20 Books of Summer reading challenge, albeit at the lower level of 10 books, again this year, too! Happy summer reading! 😎
I always end up reading children’s picture books, which I still count, so reading 20 isn’t as hard, but is also not the same accomplishment as those who read 20 actual novels. 🙂
I hope we both enjoy our selections.
My daughter is going to Missouri State this fall and I am moving her in in August. What is your fave town there?
Also, I like your strategy of reading on a whim. My mood plays such a large role in my reading these days.
The one I was referencing here is Rocheport. I love the Blufftop Bistro restaurant that is part of Les Bourgeois winery, and Merriwether Cafe which is a bike cafe right along the Katy Trail in the town. Rocheport is a cute town and the section of the Katy Trail traveling east out of town is just lovely with views of the river, large bluffs, and nice shade trees. My other favorite town in Missouri is Hermann, where we have vacationed a lot over the years.
One of the few times I’m successful when I make a list is with Autumn, spooky reading for R.I.P. Even then I wander, but usually not as much.
